Tolkien's Ringwraiths

The Ringwraiths or Nazgul of middle-earth are terrifying hooded and masked creatures in a state between living and dead. But they weren't born as these creatures. They were once powerful great kings and were given nine rings of power by Sauron. Because men desire power above all, they accepted them and the rings consumed and destroyed them and they now exist as these creatures called Ringwraiths or Nazgul under the control of Sauron, the Lord of the Ring.

Unhooded and masked they aren't a pretty sight. At Weathertop when Frodo puts on the ring he sees their true form.
