Sheffield United look set to smash their record transfer fee
paid for a player, by signing Preston's Jamiacan international
Claude Davis for a fee which could rise to �3m.

The central defender, who recently featured in the Reggae Boys'
6-0 defeat against England, has today agreed personal terms
with Blades boss Neil Warnock and is expected to complete the
move tomorrow.

Preston North End's chairman Derek Shaw said this of the deal:
"Once bids for Claude reached a certain level, it triggered a clause in his contract allowing him to speak to Premier League clubs. And although he only signed a new contract less than six months ago, this possibly prevented us losing him on a Bosman."

26-year-old Davis was a hugely influential player for the Lillywhites last season and has been linked with fellow promotion winners Reading and Watford. He now looks set to become United's second summer signing and Preston Chairman Shaw continued: "This is a deal that the Club could not afford to turn down. It is a very good deal for Preston North End and gives Claude the opportunity to go to the Premier League, which is what he has wanted all of his career."
