WHATAPHOBIA
EPISODE 17: WHATAPHOBIA - Lacey, Hank and Wanda wrestle with real and imagined fears while Oscar enlists Karen's help in some culinary revenge against Emma.

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: Taken on its own, this episode is very funny - but by Corner Gas's lofty standards, it's somewhere in the middle of the pack. The episode centers on Lacey's fear of balloons, Wanda's lack of any fear at all, and Oscar all of a sudden becoming a superb cook. On one hand, the episode is average by the show's standards, but on the other it shows just how good the show as a whole is for being able to produce a funny episode around three such lackluster plot lines. None of them are as lame as Davis regaining his sense of smell of "The Smell of Freedom," but none are nearly as funny as the Scrabble subplot in that episode, either. The moral of this episode is basically that the show is excellent even when the ideas for plots are thin.

MEMORABLE LINE: Oscar wins this category once again: "This is not about revenge, it's about getting' even."

KUDOS TO GABRIELLE: Her job of looking terrified at her surprise party was spot on, especially since such scenes generally don't make a viewer laugh. She managed to nail this one and make it funny, which couldn't have been easy.

FUNNIEST LINE IN THIS EPISODE: After Karen explains to Oscar that career women are not supposed to display traditional "women skills," Oscar laughs and says "whatever you say, toots."

FUNNIEST SCENES IN THIS EPISODE:

1.) Brent's suggestion as to how Lacey may have developed her phobia about balloons.

2.) The discovery that the Dog River police department actually has a separate radio code for "trouble at the Mini-Putt."

3.) Oscar telling Emma that anger doesn't solve anything, and Brent's comment about Oscar's remarks.

4.) The scene in the bar when Hank rehearses revealing his "terrible secret."

5.) When Oscar opens the can of peanuts.

6.) When Lacey tells Davis that she can't chat because the Ruby is swamped.

7.) When Lacey has to turn down Emma's dinner invitation.

8.) When Hank tries to scare Wanda with a globe and Brent tells him to take it away.

9.) After it's been established that Lacey is a terrible liar, Oscar tells an awkward and transparent lie to Emma and Karen says "Good cover, Lacey."

BLOOPERS:

1.)In the opening scene, Wanda is wrapping a present for Lacey. At 00:14 into the episode, the camera angle switches to Wanda's back and you see that there's a pink ribbon loosely wrapped around the present, not yet tied. However, if you rewind back to the first time the present is shown, you'll note that the ribbon is either not there or has been tied tightly enough around the present to be invisible from that angle.

2.) At 00:27, Wanda is leaning forward on the counter tilting her head to her right, looking up at Brent, when she says "I don't know whether to smack him, or pat him on the head and tell him everything's going to be all right" about Hank. When the camera angle switches to Brent, Wanda is sitting upright with her lead looking down.

3.) When Lacey panics at the sight of balloons (00:55), Brent is holding both balloons in front of his chest. As the angle switches to show Lacey bolting out of the room, the balloons are now waist-high, but when the angle switches back to Brent again to show him saying "You see, she loves it," the balloons are higher again.

4.) At 10:45, Brent is sitting at a table about to try the meal supposedly prepared by Oscar, and his (Brent's) right hand is on the table, apparently holding a glass. When the angle switches to face him, Brent's arm is already in motion with a fork in his hand.

5.) When Brent hands a fake can of peanuts to Wanda (12:52), his thumb is running parallel to the bottom of the label, right about in the middle of the can. When the focus switches to Wanda, Brent's thumb starts at the bottom of the can, pointing upwards toward the label.

6.) When Wanda scoffs at the gag and puts the can down on the counter, she's facing Brent. The focus shifts to include both Brent and Wanda, but now she's looking at the can instead of at Brent.
