TWO DEGREES OF SEPARATION
EPISODE 53: TWO DEGREES OF SEPARATION - Oscar and Emmas new digital thermostat causes problems when they cant agree on the right temperature.

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: This episode is way above average, and Id probably call it a classic if there were not a couple of episodes among the seasons first eight that are slightly better than this one.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: When Brent declared to Wanda that he had figured out her height, only to learn that Wanda had been standing on a dictionary. Why Brent didnt measure the thickness of the dictionary and perform some simple subtraction is beyond me. Of course, based on the foiled plan with Hank he could have just measured Hank from the chin up and done some simple subtraction there as well, but I digress.

MEMORABLE LINE: Its like a stop sign that didnt quite make it from Lacey, as she was casually dismissing a yield sign. It reminds me of my sisters attitude when I was teaching her how to drive. Of course, her attitude towards speed limit signs was no less casual, but I digress again.

KUDOS TO GABRIELLE: Shes priceless as she has Lacey play a.) a bitch whos pissed off at Karen, and b.) an asskisser whos sucking up to Emma. This is some of her best comedic work ever on this show, which is really saying something.

FUNNIEST LINE IN THIS EPISODE: Yeah, bite me from Lacey to Karen. As much as I like Lacey as a character, I find it especially funny when shes in a bad mood - and Gabrielle always makes this work flawlessly. The best example is probably her rant about jewelry to Wanda in the second-season
Poor Brent, but Laceys yeah, bite me is simply killer.

FUNNIEST SCENES IN THIS EPISODE:

1.)    When Hank asks Karen if shes tall enough to rob the store, and then Wanda walks in.

2.)    When Oscar rants to Lacey about how making fun of a yield sign crosses the line.

3.)    Brent trying to learn Wandas height under the guise of checking tax information.

4.)    Karens slam-dunk Shaq Attack. For those who might not know the reference, Karen is referring to
Shaquille O'Neal. If you remember the reference to Rocket Ronnie in Face Off about a guy that gives himself a nickname, clicking on the link I just provided will give you an opportunity to read up on someone who has actually given himself several.

5.)    Oscar bitching about the heat in the house, comparing it to other climates, and Emma saying I never should have gotten you that atlas.

6.)    The flashback showing how Wanda anticipated Brents plan.

7.)    Lacey mocking Davis upon seeing his new platform boots.

8.)    Oscar exploding upon learning that the new thermostat in the Leroy home is good for the environment.

9.)    Seeing both Oscar and Emma suffer under their compromise and Oscar telling Emma Oh, go hug a tree.

10.)  Wanda ruining Brents plan by making a fool out of Hank.

11.)  Oscars remark about the ozone layer.

12.)  Lacey and Karen saying Excuse me, Im right here in succession.

13.)  Karen telling the Leroys that Davis is sulking because hes shorter than she is.

14.)  Brent referring to the dictionary as my old nemesis.

15.)  Brents hypothetical refusals to take down the security sticker, especially the one showing him in a good mood.

16.)  Laceys statement that shes not an axe murderer.

17.)  Oscars Youve taken the metric system and used it for good.

NOTES: In case youre interested in the height question (and judging by some of your mail, there is an interest there, especially given how many people want to know Gabrielles height and how many actually cared enough to ask what mine is):

Nancy Robertson, who plays Wanda, is listed at 51 on imdb.com.

Karen Pelly may be 55, but in
an interview with flare.com Tara Spencer-Nairn reveals that shes actually 53.

I decided to investigate the idea that 55 (65 inches) is taller for a woman than 61 (73 inches) is for a man because it didnt sound right to me at all. After looking at several sources of average height for males and females in the United States and Canada (examples include Statistics Canada, the 2005 Canadian Community Health Survey 3.1, The United States National Center for Health Statistics, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services), I can state with the utmost confidence that Karens assertion is an absolute crock. If I were to average my findings from each source, which didnt ever vary more than a half an inch either way, the result would look like this: the average female on this continent is a quarter of an inch below 54 and the average male is a quarter of an inch below 59. Given that Davis is over four inches taller than the average male, in order for Karen to be taller for a woman than Davis is for a man she would have to be taller than 58 by a half an inch or more.
