SLIDERS - "SUMMER OF LOVE,"
SEASON 1, EPISODE 6, APRIL 19, 1995
ROLE DESCRIPTION: Gabrielle plays Fling, a member of a 60's-style flower child commune in 1995 on a parallel Earth in the sixth episode of the first season of "Sliders."

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: This episode is more bent on comedy than the average "Sliders" episode, and scores on just about every attempt. The commune members are exactly as over the top as they need to be to make the scenes work; a good example is when Skidd points out that each word from The Prophets could have a profound double meaning and Fling's reaction immediately thereafter. The three most prominent commune members - Skidd, Fling and Seeker - were all portrayed perfectly (Barry Pepper plays Skidd and Ajay Karah plays Seeker).

KUDOS TO GABRIELLE: I've said similar things elsewhere on this site, but it really impresses me that the same actress who played Fling so well can also be so convincing in roles such as Angela Perry ("The Twilight Zone"), Betty Marsh ("Inspectors 2: A Shred of Evidence"), Jill Martin ("The Silencer"), Lacey Burrows ("Corner Gas"), Joanna ("Da Vinci's Inquest"), Michelle Webster ("Highlander"), Sugar ("Floating Away"), etc. None of these characters have anything in common with each other at all, and yet Gabrielle slam-dunks every role. The widest contrast is probably between Fling, (the ridiculously cute flower child) and Angela Perry (a smart and streetwise cop); watching these two performances consecutively will leave you amazed that they were played by the same person. I know of no other actress who has played or could play such a wide variety of roles so well.

TRIVIA: When Wade makes a reference to Rembrandt being a Gemini, Fling asks "Gemini - what is that?". I've seen the "don't know what Gemini is" bit in at least two other shows and believe it's sort of a joke at the expense of Americans, 99% of whom probably don't know a.) how many of our TV shows are shot predominantly in Canada, and b.) the Gemini Awards are Canada's answer to our Emmy Awards. Gabrielle was nominated for a Gemini for her performance in two episodes of Da Vinci's Inquest (see my review here).

MEMORABLE LINE: "We feel our movement will sweep the world. All people will eventually reject commercialism and adopt the concepts of love, peace and freedom. The Summer of Love will never end. Please tell us that's true." - Fling

APPEARING HERE AND ELSEWHERE WITH GABRIELLE: Barry Pepper, who does a great job as Skidd in this episode, also played Mick Farleigh in "Madison" episode "Bad Girls." Joanna Piros, who played the newscaster in this episode, also played a reporter in "The Advocate's Devil." Joy Coghill, who played Mrs. Ezra Tweak in this episode, also played Sister Vincent in " The Other Mother: A Moment of Truth Movie." Michael Dobson, who plays a cop in this episode, also played the construction foreman in "In The Doghouse" and Agent Massey in "Just Cause." Robert Lee, who plays FBI agent Harold Yen, played a uniformed officer in "The Silencer."
