SAFETY FIRST
EPISODE 41 - SAFETY FIRST: "Brent and Karen battle out creative differences while doing a kids book on bike safety and Oscar tries to fix a roof."

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: This episode, while not actually bad in any way, is probably the low point of the third season. Plots include Oscar and Davis repeatedly getting stuck on Oscar's roof, Lacey being in dire straits after her busboy quits, and Brent / Karen / Emma collaborating on a children's safety book. The collective results of this: Hank - who took Lacey's busboy job and was in over his head with that - winds up with a job balancing Dog River's financial books, and he - along with a number of others - run to Wanda for help, leaving her utterly exhausted. There's a lot of potential with all of the plots except for the lukewarm roof one, but for the most part the humor just isn't there.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: Seeing Hank in a tie, sitting at a desk, actually doing a job (other than maintaining the ice in the town's rink).

MEMORABLE LINE: "Typical Libra - no loyalty" from Lacey. I've always thought that there has to be an extremely limited number of things dumber than classifying people's personalities based solely on what time of year their mothers get around to delivering them.

KUDOS TO GABRIELLE: The script of this episode really only gives her two chances to be funny, but she nails both of them: out of only four points in the episode that actually made me laugh, one was Lacey describing how hard busing tables is and that if you're used to serving food rather than clearing plates, the job requires you to "reverse your thinking." What made this scene so funny is her smile at the end as she leaves even though you know she's in agony, followed immediately by the people at the table completely dismissing what she said. The other one Gabrielle was responsible for was when Lacey explains her reasoning for hiring Ed and ends it with "I'm still a good person."

FUNNIEST LINE IN THIS EPISODE: Sizing up Hank's new hat, Wanda asks him "Hey, any luck finding the Temple of Doom?" This was easily the funniest moment of the entire episode.

FUNNIEST SCENES IN THIS EPISODE:

1.) Wanda, who initially refuses Hank's request to make him look good by balancing the Ruby's books, quickly agrees to do so after Hank asks if Brent is hiring.

2.) When Wanda agrees to do the town's provincial audit numbers to keep Hank from hanging around the gas station.

3.) When Wanda is about to take credit for what appears to be Karen's work (it's actually Wanda's) until Brent refers to it as "pretentious."

4.) Brent's reaction when Emma points out that kids like to color things red.

5.) When Hank slams Wanda for being "too lazy to answer a simple question."

6.) The busboy falling down after Lacey points out that being a busboy takes strength and balance.

NITPICK: After the busboy quit, we see Hank, Lacey and then Ed (the guy who wanted to paint a big pink smiley face on the water tower in first-season episode "World's Biggest") bus tables, but that doesn't answer the question about who was cooking the food - as can be clearly seen in a number of previous episodes, the first busboy was the Ruby's cook as well.

TRIVIA: Although this is the first speaking part for Josh Strait (who plays the busboy), it isn't until the opening scene of the next episode ("Hair Loss") that we learn the character's name (Josh, surprisingly enough).
