ROAD WORTHY
EPISODE 50 - ROAD WORTHY: "Lacey enlists Brents help in purchasing a new car and soon discovers what not to do, and Oscar takes the advice of Wanda to buy Emma an anniversary gift she hates."

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: The car plot is predictable, but funny enough to be in a Corner Gas episode. The anniversary gift plot is less predictable and even funnier. A third plot, which involves Karen and Davis looking for healthier alternatives to donuts but letting their taste buds gradually make the idea counterproductive, is below average by Corner Gas standards but does contain one killer moment that makes it more than worthwhile. In summary: I'd have picked a different episode for a season finale (this episode is not anywhere close in quality to the second-season finale, "
Harvest Dance"), but by the time you're done watching Nancy Robertson's Wanda reel from the shock of people taking Hank's advice over hers, you won't have any complaints.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: The episode's end, which let me sigh in relief knowing there was no season-ending cliffhanger like the ill-advised "I Love Lacey." Granted, the recovery from that cliffhanger was spectacular, but there was no need to risk it again.

MEMORABLE LINE: "Cool detachment." Brent preaches this philosophy to Lacey repeatedly but proves incapable of following his own advice. One of my father's best friends has been selling cars since America had colonies instead of states, and says that people walking into dealerships with "cool detachment" (he phrased it differently, I don't remember exactly how) are much like people who stroll into Las Vegas with a "foolproof" system - in other words, the easiest marks in the place.

KUDOS TO GABRIELLE: All of her scenes at the car dealership are great, especially the seat warmer scene.

FUNNIEST LINE IN THIS EPISODE: "I was just sayin', you never see yo-yos anymore. It's like the rain forest - but sad." from Davis to Hank. I'm not without concern towards the environment myself, but in D. C. I know people that would scream bloody murder upon hearing this - so it made me laugh hard enough to have to push the pause button.

FUNNIEST SCENES IN THIS EPISODE:

1.) When Hank claims that he thrives on pressure and Lacey asks him if he wants a piece of pie.

2.) When Karen points out that a chainsaw accident "could be painful."

3.) When Oscar walks into Corner Gas wearing sunglasses, looking like the east side of a westbound horse, and Wanda asks him "You here to pimp my ride?"

4.) When Wanda tells Oscar that Corey Hart is the Secretary General of the U.N.

5.) Brent's tribute to Alanis Morisette when he talks about losing his lost and found box.

6.) When Lacey wants to go to the car dealership but Brent wants to hear Hank's tiger story.

7.) When Emma tells Wanda about the gift she got from Oscar.

8.) When Hank counsels Brent and Lacey on their fake marriage.

9.) Karen's response when Davis asks how far she thinks he can throw his zucchini muffin.

10.) Emma's rundown about how a money could pick a better gift than what Oscar got her.

11.) When Brent wants to tell the zoo story to the car's story despite Lacey's objections.

12.) When Wanda tells Oscar "You people are obsessed with monkeys!"

13.) When Oscar asks the Goth girls what a good anniversary present would be.

14.) When Oscar gives Emma the lamest anniversary gift imaginable, and she absolutely loves it. This scene is priceless because of how it was dragged out - initially, there's every reason to expect that she'd hate it.

15.) When Wanda obsesses after Oscar tells her he preferred Hank's idea to hers.

16.) When Lacey says she could use some gas, and Brent suggests that Hank pump it. This was another scene where I had to make use of the pause button because I was laughing so much.

17.) Wanda's reaction upon hearing that Lacey preferred Hank's idea to hers.
