BREAKING THE SURFACE:
THE GREG LOUGANIS STORY - 1997
ROLE DESCRIPTION: Gabrielle plays Despina, the sister of Olympic diving star Greg Louganis.

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: This one is, unfortunately, an entry in the "worth seeing only if you're a fan of Gabrielle's" category (unless, apparently, you happen to be a gay male - which is the only audience a bomb like this could have been meant for). Being a fan of the winter Olympics instead of the summer version, I only knew the basics of the Louganis story, but pretty quickly into the movie I started to realize why I got such strange looks from the guy who rang up the rental. Gabrielle's work in the movie is good, but she doesn't get enough screen time and not even her appearance in it could make me sit through this pointless monstrosity again. If the goal of this movie was to make the viewer care one way or the other about Greg Louganis, its only chance of success would be to have an audience full of people who are already fans of his - or related to him. Other than that, complete indifference is all that could be expected from the average viewer.

SUPERFLUOUS COMMENTARY: The movie isn't nearly as bad as "Starlight," of course, but very few are - and at least "Starlight" wasn't an attempt at social commentary. In response to this ridiculously preachy movie, I'll respond with a little social commentary of my own: the reason why movies like this rarely catch on is that most of us really don't care what goes on between consenting adults behind closed doors, and it'll be a good day when Hollywood finally realizes this instead of trying tell us how we should think.

APPEARING HERE AND ELSEWHERE WITH GABRIELLE: Dale Wilson, who plays a doctor in this movie, appeared as The Man from Glad in "Corner Gas" episode "Cousin Carl." Donna Yamamoto, who plays an attorney, also appears in the movie "Jane's House." Jonathan Scarfe, who plays Keith, also played R.J. Winslow in "Madison" from 1994-1995 (I have not seen the episode of "Madison" in which Gabrielle appears, but it was a 1995 episode). Fulvio Cecere, who plays John Anders, also played Bernie Stein in "The Advocate's Devil," a tow truck driver in "Mother, May I Sleep With Danger?" and a parole officer in "The Disappearance of Vonnie." Particia Idette, who plays a social worker, played a hooker in "Floating Away." David Lewis, who plays officer #1, played the red-headed guy at the bar in both "Da Vinci's Inquest" episodes in which Gabrielle appears, Derek in "Madison" episode "The Truth Hurts," Ned Simon in "Voyage of Terror," Dylan Andrews in "Liebe auf den 2. Blick" ("Love at Second Sight"), and Hubert Peterson in "The New Addams Family" episode "New Neighbors Meet the Addams Family." Kasper Michaels, who plays a reporter, played a station manager in "In the Doghouse."
