THE LITTLEST YARBO
EPISODE 36 - THE LITTLEST YARBO: "Hank is outwitted by a German Shepherd while trying to prove it's the dog from the legendary TV show - The Littlest Hobo."

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: This marks the start of a long string of consecutive hilarious episodes for the show's third season, and this episode in particular is an instant classic. The main plot, based on a well-known Canadian TV show called The Littlest Hobo (basically a Canadian version of Lassie), shows a German shepherd which harasses Oscar and is taken by Hank to be the star of that (obviously fictional) TV show. An absolute killer side plot, perhaps inspired by an episode of Seinfeld in which Elaine meets three guys who are diametric opposites to Jerry, George and Kramer, introduces us to firefighters David and Carol - annoyingly cheerful counterparts to Davis and Karen. Another side plot has Brent wanting to get Corner Gas / The Ruby travel mugs and Lacey being equally enthusiastic towards the idea -so enthusiastic, in fact, that she jumps the gun and screws everything up after losing her patience with Brent's indecision regarding the logo design. This episode represents Corner Gas at its highest levels, and upon receiving a tape of the show from Canada I actually watched "The Littlest Yarbo" four or five times in a row before moving on to "Mail Fraud." Every plot is a killer, and they're all executed to near perfection.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: When Lacey unveils the new travel mugs. Absolutely side-splitting.

MEMORABLE LINE: "You know I can't resist you when you talk like a seven year-old girl" from Lacey to Brent. It has little to do with this episode, but did remind me of the subpar "I Love Lacey" and the spectacular "The Brent Effect."

KUDOS TO GABRIELLE: Actually, Gabrielle wasn't really given much of a chance to excel in this episode (except for the unveiling of the mugs, which was a killer job on her part), but kudos to Lacey for unintentionally coming up with hilarious travel mugs, and kudos to my better half for finding a couple of them for us.

FUNNIEST LINE IN THIS EPISODE: When Wanda, eager to pour gas on the fire and have some fun at Brent's expense due to his obsessing over the travel mugs, calls Lacey a "cagey wench."

FUNNIEST SCENES IN THIS EPISODE:

1.) Almost every scene in this episode is hilarious, so I'll try to restrain myself:

2.) Lacey trying to explain whether she's being anal or cheap regarding coffee travel mugs.

3.) Hank pretending to pass out in front of the German shepherd and the responses Davis / Karen and David / Carol (especially Davis' warning about grass stains).

4.) Karen's assessment of Carol, followed immediately by Lacey's assessment of firefighters.

5.) Wanda asking Hank to do her taxes next year.

6.) Davis telling Karen "We have respect" and Oscar's greeting to the two immediately thereafter.

7.) Hank walking out into traffic blindfolded while Davis and Karen ignore him.

8.) Carol's lame joke when Davis and Karen show up to Oscar and Emma's looking for free food.

9.) Davis and Karen shoving everyone aside during a fire drill.

10.) When Brent tells Lacey to call him "Corner G" and signs off with "peace out, Rub."

11.) When Hank coaxes Oscar into creating a bonfire out of a pile of leaves, and Oscar compliments the idea.

12.) When the dog steals a can of lighter fluid in front of an oblivious Brent, and David and Carol miss the point entirely.

13.) When Brent refuses to acknowledge Hank until Hank calls him "Corner G."

14.) When the dog locks Hanks and Brent in a tool shed and Brent complains that "this isn't very hobo-like."
