LACEY BORROWS
EPISODE 65: LACEY BORROWS - "Lacey and Karen try to prove what good friends they are by letting each other borrow whatever they want."

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: If you watched "
The Good Old Table Hockey Game" without knowing anything about hockey or the 1972 Summit Series, you probably found that episode to be subpar by series standards. If so, this episode - despite its Seinfeldesque plots - will put everything back on track for you. The main plot has Lacey and Karen borrowing things from each other out of spite, and the second Seinfeld-like plot has Hank doing a perfect imitation of Kramer as he does his best to ensure that the his pants carry every imaginable convenience and utility (get your mind out of the gutter - I meant pliers, beer, jam, etc.). The third plot has Brent, who has never seen a horror movie, being forced to watch one by his parents. The plot with Hank's pants really isn't all that funny, but the other two are brilliant and perfectly executed.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: The flashback of Brent's horror movie date. Only Brent Leroy would leave a girl's side in favor of food when a horror movie is playing. For (expletive deleted)'s sake, everyone male old enough to drive knows that the whole idea of a teenage male taking a girl to a horror movie is hoping that she'll be scared enough to hang all over him all night, and if you're going to a drive-in you have the chance to bring the damn food and sodas along with you rather than paying through the nose at the theater and missing time with your date, andoh, never mind. Still, the idea of Brent doing this is pretty funny.

MEMORABLE LINE: "Horror movies are stupid. Name one good horror movie you've seen" from Oscar. I must be turning into an elderly curmudgeon myself, because I agree with Oscar completely. I couldn't name a good horror movie if you offered me Islanders season tickets and rides to the games on the team plane.

KUDOS TO GABRIELLE: She is amazingly funny as she plays a pissed-off and spiteful character. She handles every angry expression perfectly, and in this episode she probably made me laugh more often than she has in any other. It should be noted that Tara Spencer-Nairn handled her role as Lacey's "opponent" superbly as well, but Gabrielle is the MVP of this episode because she got more chances to excel and nailed every single one.

FUNNIEST LINE IN THIS EPISODE: Oscar's description of the horror movie the gang was watching in Lacey's house: "It's about some stupid evil cat, but it won't die - and Team Canada tries to kill it." Classic.

FUNNIEST SCENES IN THIS EPISODE:

1.) When Wanda describes the "meat hook" part of the horror movie she loved. This is especially funny because of the way she laughs while describing something so horrific.

2.) The fake episode ending.

3.) Davis's laughably bad math while talking to Hank in the Ruby. Instead of twelve years or twelve days, the answer Davis was looking for is about 1.25 years (this doesn't count leap year February 29ths) - even if such ridiculous hypothetical circumstances (Hank spending 50 minutes per day, every day, looking for his stuff over the course of 36 years) were applicable.

4.) Wanda trying to sell Brent on a horror movie and Brent being more interested in Garfield.

5.) Oscar's interpretation of Lacey's mention of a "don't ask policy." Oscar is referring to the United States military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays in the service.

6.) The pulled-over driver laughing at Karen's sunglasses. The sight of Karen in those ridiculous Paris Hilton glasses was equally funny.

7.) When Lacey borrows the cell phone, threatens to make long-distance calls, Karen seems indifferent, and then we discover that it isn't Karen's cell phone after all.

8.) When Hank offers Brent jam from his pants and Brent wisely refuses.

9.) When Hank offers Brent peanut butter and Brent refuses that, too.

10.) When Davis says "I'm not good at confrontation."

11.) When Oscar asks a series of questions about the movie and Wanda answers him.

12.) The reactions of Wanda, Brent, Karen and Emma after the buzzsaw incident

13.) When Emma claims that the horror movie is the scariest one she's seen yet, and Brent is still fixated on the idea of cats jumping out.

14.) Brent's description of Oscar's sentences.

15.) The look on Lacey's and Karen's faces when Lacey says "You borrowed my house."

16.) Brent suggesting scary music for the above scene.

17.) Lacey's assessment of Karen's Mahjong skills.

18.) Emma being too scared to go into the basement and Oscar making fun of her for it.

19.) The revelation that Lacey owns a woodchipper. This really cracked me up.

20.) Lacey and Karen squaring off in front of the police station. This scene was hilarious and featured the best acting in the episode, both by Gabrielle and Tara Spencer-Nairn. Classic.

21.) Brent's entire description of the "monkey playing basketball" movie.

22.) The real episode ending looking so similar to the fake one.

NOTE: For those of you who watched first-season episode "
Cell Phone" and wondered what kind of cell phone Davis eventually decided on, you get your answer here - it's a Kyocera Slider. This means that one of three things is very low: Davis's salary, the police budget, or Davis's desire to spend money on a cell phone.
