JUST CAUSE - "HIDE AND SEEK," SEASON 1, EPISODE 18, MARCH 30, 2003
ROLE DESCRIPTION: Gabrielle plays an assistant to a bottom-feeding shyster who specializes in launching frivolous lawsuits and collecting settlements under the guise of "consumer advocacy."

SERIES BACKGROUND: The series revolves around Alexandra DeMonaco, who was a good mom and clean citizen until unfairly being sent to jail because of an insurance scam that was being actually being perpetuated by her scumbag husband. The husband walked away with five million bucks and the couple's daughter, and Alexandra got a sentence of five years, which she used to study law and get her degree. Now a paralegal, she's fighting to clear her name and find her daughter.

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: The show is fairly entertaining, taking plenty of occasions to offset serious themes with humor. This episode features Gabrielle playing an ostensibly ditzy, unprofessional and yet surprisingly sharp-minded legal assistant who paints her toenails and slurps down 7-11 Big Gulps at her desk, makes a mean tuna melt (she puts picked chips under the cheese), shows up late to court after breaking a heel on one of her shoes, bribes a judge with coffee, objects out of turn in court, dresses more like a flirt than a paralegal, and yet proves to be quite adept at her job. Her role is part of a side plot which is the humorous offset to the more serious main plot, and goes a long way to make up for the main plot's unnecessarily sappy ending.

KUDOS TO GABRIELLE: If Corner Gas or Robson Arms aren't enough to prove that she excels in comedic roles as well as dramatic ones, this episode should be more than enough for you. The comedy here is unlike anything in Corner Gas or Robson Arms and her role is a striking opposite to many of her other roles, most notably Angela Perry in Twilight Zone episode "To Protect and Serve" and the senior government official she plays "One Dead Indian" - yet another testimony to her impressive versatility as an actress.

APPEARING HERE AND ELSEWHERE WITH GABRIELLE: David Bloom, who plays Dr. Seymour, also played Anton Gruschek in M.A.N.T.I.S. episode "Black Dragon" and Helsman Simms in "Voyage of Terror." Charles Siegel, who appeared in this episode, played Professor Hal Buckner in The Sentinel episode "Smart Alec" and played a judge in "Advocate's Devil." Aaron Douglas, who appeared in this episode, played Greg Johnson in Breaking News episode "Dunne's Choice" and a worker in "Inspectors 2: a Shred of Evidence." Michael Dobson, who played Agent Massey, played a cop in Sliders episode "Summer of Love" and a construction foreman in "In the Doghouse." Peter Flemming, who appeared in this episode, also appeared in First Wave episode "Susperience.""
