JUST BRENT AND HIS SHADOW
EPISODE 54: JUST BRENT AND HIS SHADOW - Brent and Lacey get competitive when they start mentoring local high school students as part of a job shadow program.

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: This episode is an absolute classic on all levels. Aside from the job shadow plot, side plots include Emma trying to nicer to Oscar and driving him towards Wanda. When I first saw this episode, I watched it again immediately. Every cast member is spectacular and gets a chance to show it, and both of the kids who play job shadows are great as well.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: The scene when Pam explains to a customer that Brent sold him the wrong air filter. Thinking back to the days when I - much like many irresponsible jackass kids of my age in the late 70s and early 80s - loved to make prank phone calls, this scene reminded me of the days when my friends and I used to call auto parts stores and ask if they stocked non-existent items such as muffler bearings (I know, I'm not proud of it, but in my defense my friends and I had a rule - we never bothered private residences, we reserved our juvenile crap for businesses). More often as not, the part-time high school kid who answered the phone would actually look into our request, which is why we found it so funny and why it took us so long to tire of an activity so blatantly stupid and pointless.

MEMORABLE LINE (two lines for the price of one here): Brents Thats admirable - its foolhardy and fraught with pitfalls and peril, but its admirable in response to Emma saying that shes trying to be nicer to Oscar. This line is magnified later in the episode when Lacey responds to Emmas Im trying to be nicer to him (Oscar) with Oh, good for you - I mean, thats an uphill battle with very little chance of success, but good for you. I thought it was sheer genius to put two lines so easily tied together so far apart in the episode.

KUDOS TO GABRIELLE: She was hilarious as the anal-retentive mentor who tried to claim credit for her job shadows successes at every turn. It never ceases to amaze me how well she can play someone with such a capacity for obnoxiousness and still have her character remain likeable. It says a hell of a lot about how good Gabrielle is at what she does.

FUNNIEST LINE IN THIS EPISODE: Will there be stacking? I love to stack stuff from Brents job shadow, Pam.

FUNNIEST SCENES IN THIS EPISODE:

1.)    When Hank tells Lacey to blink twice if shes in danger.

2.)    When Brent talks about how he manages to run a business without resorting to child labor.

3.)    Hanks remark about the soap dish at the garage sale.

4.)    Emmas remark that shes really impressed with Hanks sign and adding a lot of those letters are from the alphabet.

5.)    When Lacey points out that almost everyone has said fondue, and Pam weighs in to let everyone know that she (Pam) hadnt said it yet.

6.)    Oscar acting suspiciously when Emma brings him a drink and suggests going for a walk later.

7.)    Laceys recounting of one of those lame Secret Santa gifts from last year.

8.)    Oscar talking to Wanda outside of the gas station, explaining that Emmas losing it - along with Wandas responses.

9.)    Pam saying I find you very abrasive to Wanda, along with Wandas response.

10.)  Wandas Im a jerk to Oscar.

11.)  Brents the important thing is not to get intimidated by all the stuff that I know to Kyle, after demonstrating how to stack washer fluid.

12.)  Brent telling Kyle that he (Kyle) wont get ahead in life reading Report on Business and then pointing out that stacking motor oil is a whole other bag of snakes.

13.)  Kyles reaction to Wandas Math class must be looking pretty good right now.

14.)  When Oscar says Oh, I saw Wanda today - at the gas station, and Emma responds with Oh, I bet when you tell people that they dont believe you.

15.)  Oscars Oh, typical - I mention someone four times in a row, and suddenly you think I have a crush on them.

16.)  When a customer cant find his wallet and Kyle says dont worry about it. This was especially funny after the way Brent set up the scene.

17.)  When Pam so eagerly volunteers to be Brents job shadow - the entire scene is outstanding, and ends with Pams killer Will there be stacking? I love to stack stuff (another in the long list of Corner Gas scenes that made me pause the recording because I was laughing so hard).

18.)  In the same scene, the look on Kyles face as Lacey says Sorry, no offense. This was done to absolute perfection.

19.)  The entire scene from when Pam explains the air filter situation to a customer to when she volunteers to correct Brents mistakes on her termination form.

20.)  Wanda turning off Oscar by being nice to him.

21.)  When Kyles parents confront Lacey, especially when Kyles mother says Youre a bad person to Lacey.

22.)  When Oscar asks what the soup of the day is and Lacey replies Cream of shut up.
