I, WITNESS
EPISODE 57: I, WITNESS - Karen prepares a speech on eyewitness testimony while Hank tries to live out his dream of becoming a rodeo clown.

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: In terms of overall humor, this episode is roughly average by Corner Gas standards, but was still somewhat difficult to watch. Emma is usually a likeable character, but was an intolerable bitch to Lacey after Lacey committed the apparently unpardonable sin of trying to help by being Emmas bridge partner and then playing poorly. The humor that came out of the situation was often overshadowed by Emma being such a reprehensible hag to someone who didnt deserve it.

Side plots include Hank following his dream of being a rodeo clown, and Karen having to deliver a lecture on the unreliability of eyewitness testimony with Wanda trying to help her without coming across as a know-it-all. The latter is funnier than the former overall, but the former had a few good moments.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: Seeing Emma treat Lacey like garbage after Lacey screwed up by playing a poor game of Bridge. I know that having Emma show her dark side was necessary for some of the plot, but I thought this was overdone. Yes, its true, the primordial genetic disposition towards chivalry in me didnt like seeing Lacey treated that way, but my real problem was seeing Emma as someone I could easily imagine myself despising.

My better half came up with an interesting thought while watching this episode, though she said You know, youd have to be pretty stupid to behave like such a bitch to someone who so often cooks food you eat.

MEMORABLE LINE: So what you should do is fix the bidding so youre never the declarer from Oscar to Lacey. If you have to sit in on a game of Bridge and really dont know what youre doing, youll never get a piece of advice better than this one. I got it when I was first starting out and have given it more than a few times since.

KUDOS TO GABRIELLE: Except for the stupid joke about referring to bidding conventions as butaboos - which no actor alive could have rescued - this episode features some of her best work of the season to date (as of this writing, Ive seen eight episodes of the fourth season, and so far in this season only in Blog River is she better than she is in this one). Highlights include her remark about joining the Marines and her absolutely priceless Diana Prince routine.

FUNNIEST LINE IN THIS EPISODE: Davis, use your nightstick on this idiot from Oscar regarding Hank.

FUNNIEST SCENES IN THIS EPISODE:

1.)    The flashback showing little Lacey asking her mother if she wanted to play cards.

2.)    When Hank saves Davis from a group of kids. Actually, the majority of the humor in this scene was the kids bombarding Davis with kickballs.

3.)    When Wanda asks Brent if he wants to get in on a psychology experiment, and Brent sarcastically says I didnt know how to ask.

4.)    When Brent and Karen are chanting 19 in answer to Wandas Whats four times five? and Oscar says 21!

5.)    When Davis summons Hank to distract Oscar, and Oscar says Davis, use your nightstick on this idiot. This one really cracked me up, as did Oscar calling Hank a nimrod.

6.)    The way Lacey rolled her eyes after saying I appreciate the advice to Emma.

7.)    Brent lecturing Davis about the rodeo clown code.

8.)    Lacey saying that she is going to take ownership of her feelings - followed by her Diana Prince routine. Absolutely classic.

9.)    When Hank says that he looked into being a space fireman, but hes too short.

10.)  When Brent realizes that Laceys intent to take ownership of her feelings could turn out very, very badly.

11.)  When Hank bursts into Emmas living room to save Lacey.

12.)  When Lacey asks if Hanks going to be okay and Brent throws Hank under the bus.
