HERO SANDWICH
EPISODE 20: HERO SANDWICH - "When the local police start cracking down on jaywalkers, the only good news is Lacey's new sandwich."

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: This is one of the top three episodes of the season. Although there have been a few funnier episodes during the show's two seasons, this one in particular is probably the best example of one in which every regular cast member gets a chance to shine. The side plots are great, the main plot is killer, and there wasn't a lame joke to be found anywhere (as good as the show is, all of the other episodes have at least one). Although there have been a few episodes that are higher on my list, if I wanted to try to get someone hooked on the show by showing him or her only one episode, this one would be one of those on the top of my list.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: Oscar's anti-government rant - especially because as of late, if he were to do so in the United States, it really wouldn't sound all that crazy.

MEMORABLE LINES:

1.) From Hank: "There's nothing wrong with jaywalking. It's how things get done."
2.) From Oscar: "Yeah, sure, it's a traffic light now - but the next thing you know, there'll be advance left turn signals and computer chips stapled to our ears."
3.) From Lacey: "It is not arbitrary - it's just something I came up with and I'm sticking to for no reason."

KUDOS TO GABRIELLE: Her performance as Lacey having a meltdown regarding the excessive popularity of her new sandwich is hilarious. It starts when she goes up to a booth and tells her customers that the special is a Denver with fries, and continues throughout the episode. Her final solution to the problem was ingenious and extremely funny. This was one of her top comedic performances of the season; the only one that struck me as significantly funnier was watching her chase people out of her restaurant in "Slow Pitch."

FUNNIEST SCENES IN THIS EPISODE:

These are all in addition to the entire Lacey "Ruby Club" meltdown throughout the episode.

1.) The "gentle reminder" about the new crosswalk from Gus at the Daily Howler.
2.) When Hanks explains what the plural of "werewolf" is, and Brent - after a brief hesitation - decides not to bother explaining the irrelevance of the matter and simply says "Also a good point."
3.) When Brent tells Oscar not to worry about the crosswalk and traffic light, saying that no one will take it too seriously, and the next scene shows Davis roughing up a suspect like Dirty Harry.
4.) When Oscar, having accused Lacey of being a communist because she's keeping an open mind about the traffic light, says "Crazy talk. I don't know why anyone asks you anything. What are your specials today?"
5.) When Emma asks Lacey "You invented soup?"
6.) When Lacey explains to Oscar how upset her accountants will be about giving Emma a free pickle, but "what the heck." On its own the scene is amusing, but is really funny with Oscar's response of being proud of himself instead of insulted by obvious sarcasm.
7.) In response to Oscar's "Yeah, sure, it's a traffic light now - but the next thing you know, there'll be advance left turn signals and computer chips stapled to our ears," Hank scoffs and says "That's pretty farfetched - left turn signals."
8.) Shortly after Hank accuses Lacey of twisting his and Oscar's words to further her "traffic light agenda," he says "Oh, Lacey, just drop it - when it comes to getting around, I think we know what we're doing," and immediately proves himself wrong as he and Oscar can't even manage getting out of their restaurant booth properly.
9.) The entire scene when Karen gives Brent a ticket for jaywalking and Brent points out that she jaywalked to give him the ticket.
10.) Lacey's explanation about how her whiteout rule isn't arbitrary.
11.) Lacey telling her customer "Lookit, anything you want, I'll make" as if she's offering to hook him up with illegal drugs or guns.

BLOOPERS: To be posted after the second season DVD becomes available.
