FUN RUN
EPISODE 38 - FUN RUN: "Lacey wants to start a running club but when Brent joins it's clear he's the one driving it. Literally."

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: This episode is a relative rarity: a well above-average episode which, except for the opening scene, has very few individual side-splitting moments - but works very well as a whole. The main plot involves a running club that has Lacey struggling to keep up. One side plot has Emma making good use of Oscar's handicap plates while Oscar attempts to prove to the town that he doesn't need them, and the other features Hank taking his crossing guard job too seriously. The episode features a guest appearance from Jan Arden, and the hilarious opening scene shows former Canadian PM Paul Martin.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: Emma parking in a handicap space and limping to keep up appearances. I know about a dozen people who do this, and although on the surface it's a pretty low thing to do, living in Washington, D.C. has made me more understanding towards them - there have been times where I probably would have done it myself.

MEMORABLE LINE: After Lacey tells Brent about the Fun Run, he says "Jeez, there's two words that don't belong together." I had to participate in more of these "fun runs" during my military days than I cared to (actually, even one was more than cared for), and I couldn't agree with Brent more than I already do. Of course, at least the Dog River Fun Run is a voluntary event.

KUDOS TO GABRIELLE: She does a great job making the pain of forced running seem funny. This is no mean feat, since running is (at least in my opinion) the most boring and miserable "healthy" activity known to man. I'd rather swim 10K in boiling oil than run 10K.

FUNNIEST LINE IN THIS EPISODE: After Lacey tells Brent that running can help the quality of his sleep, Brent says "Maybe you guys could talk about running some more, I'll drift right off."

FUNNIEST SCENES IN THIS EPISODE:

1.) Paul Martin's reaction to Brent's fishing for a ministerial position.

2.) Davis' attempt to get handicap plates.

3.) Hank's crossing guard exam.

4.) Hank explaining to drivers why he's stopping cars for Oscar.

5.) When Emma tries to explain to Oscar why he should keep his handicap plates.

6.) The flashback of Karen losing her gun.

7.) Lacey's "I'm faster than a lame old man!"

8.) When the doctor offers handicap plates to Lacey, and Davis' reaction.

9.) Lacey finishing behind Oscar in the Fun Run and "declining" assistance. This was particularly funny because the race's organizers were rolling up the banners at this point, a sure sign that Lacey's time wasn't very impressive.

BLOOPERS: Forthcoming.
