HIGHLANDER -
"EPITAPH FOR TOMMY,"
SEASON 2, EPISODE 10, NOVEMBER 29, 1993
ROLE DESCRIPTION: Gabrielle plays Bess, who appears in a flashback to 1866 Maryland where she has a roll in the hay - literally - with Duncan MacLeod. Her fianc shows up, challenges MacLeod to a duel, and clumsily kills Bess by accident.

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: This was almost certainly the first time I ever saw Gabrielle on screen. Her scene was a good one, but to be honest I didn't remember her until "Rite of Passage," when my better half reminded me of who she was. The only impression that counted, though, was the one she made on the producers of "Highlander." In producer / writer interviews on the second season DVD set, executive producer Bill Panzer (who also produced the "Highlander" movies) said "We even found a girl, Gabrielle Miller, who was, just for informational purposes, was (sic) the gal in the haywagon, and we liked her so much she came back later in an episode called 'Rite of Passage.'" Since "Rite of Passage" was the first show I really noticed Gabrielle in, this site probably wouldn't exist had she not made such a good impression on those who actually mattered in "Epitaph for Tommy."

TRIVIA: The license plate on Tommy Bannon's car, 507 ASB, is the same one you see in "Color of Authority," two episodes later in season three, on Mako's truck as Mako plows down Laura Daniels. Credit my better half for this freakish bit of trivia, which only she could have noticed. Laura Daniels is played by Deanna Milligan, who appeared with Gabrielle in "Starlight," "The Advocate's Devil," "Dead Man's Gun" (in the "My Brother's Keeper" segment in which Gabrielle appears) and "Corner Gas" episode "Harvest Dance." Both of these episodes are on the same disc of the second season DVD set, so if you have the set and are so inclined it won't be very inconvenient for you to check the license plates for yourself. For fans of "Highlander," this is the episode which features Richie Ryan's first Quickening, and a bit of personal trivia is involved here: the first time I saw this episode with my better half, I got a considerable swat upside the head (a good-natured one, of course, but it was a pretty solid shot) while rooting for Mako. I don't doubt that Stan Kirsch is a perfectly nice guy, but for all of my exposure to "Highlander" (we have all six seasons on DVD in my house, which is a travesty considering that as of this writing there are only four seasons of "Cheers" available), I never could stand the character he played.

MEMORABLE LINE: "The girls say that men are like horses - big and stupid. But they do have their uses." - Bess

APPEARING HERE AND ELSEWHERE WITH GABRIELLE: Bill Dow, who played Harry in this episode, also appeared in the following four "Breaking News" episodes in which Gabrielle appears: "A River in Egypt," "The Truth Hurts," "A Lie Worth Fighting For," and "Don't it Always Seem to Go?" Jan D'arcy, who played Betty Bannon in this episode, played Sister Agatha in "The Other Mother: A Moment of Truth Movie." Nicholas Harrison, who played Ned (the clumsy moron who killed Bess) in this episode, appeared as a cop in "Breaking News" episode "Bad Water." Ken Camroux, who plays Mike Honniger, played Judge Gambi in "The Advocate's Devil" and General Jefferies in "Moment of Truth: To Walk Again." Adrian Paul, who plays Duncan MacLeod, played the same role with Gabrielle in third-season episode "Rite of Passage," in which MacLeod tries to school Gabrielle's character, Michelle Webster, in the fine art of immortality.
