COMEDY NIGHT
EPISODE 10: COMEDY NIGHT - "Lacey asks Brent to join her book club and helps him humiliate an annoying comedian from out of town."

This episode features Peter Kelamis as Bob Lang.

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: Although Grad 68 is the funniest episode of the first season, this one of the two or three funniest, and is actually my favorite episode of the season.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: When Bob Lang bombs onstage after Lacey uses her "knowledge of local geography to defeat the enemy."

KUDOS TO GABRIELLE: Although in strictly comedic terms her best work of the season was in Grad 68, in terms of sheer overall acting her best work is in this episode. Gabrielle does a spectacular job of slowly going nuts because of the direction the book club is taking. The best part: just after she sarcastically points out that given the books the club has been reading, they might as well just watch movies. Brent says Lacey has a point, and for a split second Lacey has a glimmer of hope on her face - this was done perfectly, especially since her hope is so swiftly and predictably crushed immediately thereafter. Lacey's ensuing meltdown was perfectly done, too.

Another great job by Gabrielle: the way Lacey was so touched on a sentimental level after being told that her revenge is "swift and brutal." Getting a solid laugh out of such a quick and nonchalant response can't be easy, but she did it here.

Still another: when Lacey goes up to Bob Lang and confuses him as to which town he's performing in, she spits like a vengeful psycho upon mentioning Dog River. Lang looks at her like she nuts enough to be able to hide her own Easter eggs, and she just lets out a cute laugh as if everything was normal. Gabrielle handled this scene flawlessly.

MEMORABLE LINE: Easily the most memorable line in this episode comes first from Brent, then from Lacey: "YOU CAN NEVER LEAVE THE GAME."

FUNNIEST SCENE IN THIS EPISODE: In the opening scene, when Lacey spits on the floor upon hearing "Wullerton" and finds herself shocked at what she's done, Brent gives her an evil grin and says "You're one of us now." An honorable mention is Colin Mochrie's cameo.

TRIVIA: Peter Kelamis and Gabrielle were both in the movie "Voyage of Terror" and in a second-season episode of "Alienated" called "Human Gas."

BLOOPERS:

1.) When Hank asks Paul for permission to MC comedy night, the cart gets loaded with beer a little too quickly for the continuity of the scene, a case of beer appears at the end of the tailgate before it should, and two cases of beer appear on top of the case of LaBatt's far more quickly than they could have in real time. Also, it sounds like Paul was loading empties from the truck to the cart. One would think it should be the other way around.
2.) When Paul starts laughing at Hank's non-joke, there's a truck visible behind Paul coming to a stop in front of a stop sign. A split second later, the truck has vanished entirely.
3.) The level of Oscar's beer goes up a bit between the time when he says there's nothing good on TV anymore and when Brent says "You were laughing at the TV last night." Then it goes back down between the time he chants "Dingoes, dingoes, dingoes" and when Brent asks him how many beers he's had.
4.) When Lacey asks Brent for his opinion about the novel, her hair is up but there's a thin strand of hair hanging down her right (viewer's left) shoulder. That strand then goes up and down as the scenes shift between Lacey, Brent and Hank. The strand hangs down when the shot is exclusively on Lacey, and up when on both Lacey and Hank.
5.) When the book club meets, Oscar tries to grab a sandwich but gets his hand swatted away by Emma, who uses her copy of "The Life of Pi" to hit Oscar's hand away. A second or two later, Emma's copy of the book has vanished (when she says "Never feel you need an excuse to leave the house").
6.) This is more of a nitpick than a blooper, but here goes: when the book club meets again, Brent is talking about "First Blood," but everyone is either holding a copy of "Mac Bolan: Executioner #147" or has a copy beside them (as Lacey does).
