BINGO NIGHT
EPISODE 22: BINGO NIGHT - "Wanda's skills as the new bingo caller in town please everyone - except Emma."

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: Much like "Smell of Freedom," this is an example of an episode in which a side plot steals the show over the main one. The bingo plot really isn't all that funny, but the plot in which Lacey adds freshly-baked cookies to the menu and can't sell any to a town addicted to processed "road cookies" is great. Also better than the bingo plot is Karen's suspension for failing a drug test due to allergy medication; Tara Spencer-Nairn is hilarious as a suspended cop whose abundance of free time is getting on everybody's nerves, and a subplot of this is Hank's getting jealous of all the time Karen spends hanging around with Brent in the store. The episode as a whole is great, which given the lame nature of the bingo plot is a testimony to the overall quality of the show.

MEMORABLE MOMENT: The first person to call 'bingo' in the episode is actually someone who won a contest to be on the show.

MEMORABLE LINE: Upon hearing the Brent just hung out with Karen, Hank says "That's not hanging out - she's a girl! She probably talked about, uh, you know, clouds and skirts and rainbows."

KUDOS TO GABRIELLE: Much like her job portraying Lacey's meltdown about the Ruby Club in "Hero Sandwich," her entire performance in this episode having Lacey vapor-lock over the cookie issue is priceless.

FUNNIEST SCENES IN THIS EPISODE:

1.) When Brent says to Karen "Just in case you're jonesing, I locked up the Sudafed."

2.) The entire scene in the store when Lacey asks Brent about the "road cookies" which were eaten in her restaurant, and Brent comes up with a "customer confidentiality" excuse.

3.) Lacey's announcement to the Ruby's customers about there no longer being a need to hide "road cookies" in the restaurant, and the "sound of coffee going up a buck" when the predictable reaction takes place.

4.) When Emma says "I can't rely on luck, I have to be proactive," Oscar responds with "That, or you could do something about it yourself."

5.) When Karen asks Lacey for a cookie and Lacey accuses her of acting out of pity.

6.) Oscar's attempts to fix a leaking pipe and blame Brent for it.

7.) Davis' ridiculous theory about "Logan's Run."

BLOOPERS:

1.) In the opening seconds of the episode, Wanda walks in to Corner Gas, and there is a video tape and a plastic case on the counter. A corner of the case is touching the tape, and the case is halfway perpendicular to it. As Wanda passes Brent and the camera angle changes, the tape moves to a position roughly parallel to the case and about a half a foot in front of it. As Wanda leaves the store, both the tape and the case have returned to their original positions.

2.) At about 4:14, Wanda greets Emma in the bingo hall, and you can see all 20 of Emma's well-marked bingo cards as she waits for the B-7 and O-72 that will win the game for her. I may not understand the game very well, but Emma appears to have several instances of bingo already, most notably on the card next to the blue ping-pong-sized ball on the table.

3.) At that very same point, look at the menagerie of lucky charms that Emma has on the table. Note that the two rows (of Emma's cards) to the viewer's right have nothing in front of them, and to the right of those two rows next to Emma's left (viewer's right) elbow there appears to be some sort of battery-operated, head-bobbing squirrel or dinosaur with stealth capability. The bingo caller calls "B," makes everyone wait for the number, and you get another shot of the cards. When the caller finally says "7," the shot switches back to Emma's cards, and now there are three stuffed animals in front of those two rows and the stealth squirrel / dinosaur appears to be one of them.

4.) At 12:59, Hank gets into Davis' squad car and rests his right elbow neat the mechanism one would push down to lock the car. As the shot goes from Hank to Davis to Hank, the mechanism goes from visible to invisible and back to visible again.

5.) At 15:34, while Brent, Oscar and Karen are sitting at the Ruby's counter, Lacey triumphantly comes out with a plate full of biscotti. Look at how Lacey is holding the plate, and then look at the plate as the angle switches to Brent - the plate is at least a half a foot lower. When the shot switches back to Lacey, the plate is at its original level.

6.) When Emma visits Fred at his house, Fred is sitting in his chair with his arm in a sling and his leg in a cast. The first shot of him, at 17:33, shows his hand in front of his stomach, and the next (facing Emma) shows little of Fred but his leg - and yet you can see part of Fred's hand resting on his leg. The next shot of Fred shows his hand even farther away from his leg than it was in the first shot. This continues throughout the scene.

7.) At 18:25, Brent is trying to repair a mop, and he uses his right hand to hold broken pieces together. When the shot turns to face him, his right hand is no longer holding anything, and he uses it to grab a roll of tape. When Hank walks in and you see Brent from the original angle, Brent has managed to switch hands, now taping with the left hand and holding the mop with the right again - but just after Hanks says that Davis has really interesting theories on Logan's Run, the shots witches back to Brent and he has switched hands again.

8.) At 20:02, Fred is back calling bingo, and we see Emma's cards again. Again, Emma appears to have several instances of bingo already - and again, most notably on the card closest to the little blue ball. Thankfully, the stealth squirrel / dinosaur has returned as well.
