ROBSON ARMS - "AFTERSHOCK" SEASON 1, EPISODE 13,
JULY 29, 2005.
NOTE: I have now seen all 13 episodes of Robson Arms to date (CTV has ordered a second season of the show, but as of this writing production of that second season is not yet underway). As I indicated in my review of "The Telltale Latex," Gabrielle does make brief appearances in other episodes of the show, but only "The Telltale Latex" and this one warrant a review, as Gabrielle's appearances in the other episodes don't amount to any more than a combined minute or two.

ROLE DESCRIPTION AND EPISODE SUMMARY: Gabrielle plays Bobbi Briggs, who is a small town girl from the prairies (Regina, apparently) that married Bobby Briggs (played by Tobias Mehler, Gabrielle's real-life boyfriend when these episodes were shot) and moved to big-city Vancouver. In "The Telltale Latex," Bobbi finds a condom wrapper in their bedroom, immediately jumps to the wrong conclusion and responds by hopping in the sack with the Yuri Kukoc, the Robson Arms handyman who uses tenants' apartments for his trysts and was actually responsible for the condom wrapper being in Bobbi's bedroom to begin with. Shortly after her roll in the hay with Yuri, she realizes her mistake, but Bobby finds a condom wrapper stuck to his back in the couple's bed towards the end of "The Telltale Latex" and that episode ends with the status of the relationship in doubt.

As we get to "Aftershock," months have passed since Bobbi's one-nighter with Yuri. She finally decides that she can't live with herself and tells all to Bobby, who flies into a rage and decides that the best way to handle the situation is to emulsify Yuri with a Kendo stick. As the chase ensues, Yuri and Bobby wind up in Yuri's apartment, where their fight - which was going overwhelmingly in Yuri's favor - is interrupted by an earthquake which renders Yuri helpless.

OVERALL IMPRESSIONS: This episode is not nearly as enjoyable as "The Telltale Latex," although Gabrielle's performance here is just as good as it is in that episode. Tobias Mehler gets more time in this episode than he does in "The Telltale Latex," and he's superb from start to finish. Particularly impressive (and amusing) on Mehler's part was how incompetent he looked with a Kendo stick (especially given how well he handles a sword in "Young Blades") but everything else he does in this episode is top-notch. Just as good in many aspects is the performance of John Cassini as Yuri, who manages to go from a callous boor to a surprisingly sensitive guy without shifting gears or dropping any part of his overall sleazeball faade.

KUDOS TO GABRIELLE: She did a great job evoking sympathy for a character that really didn't deserve much sympathy at all.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS:
1.) Yuri's story about his father.
2.) Yuri pointing out to Bobby that Bobbi had nothing to gain and everything to lose by telling him (Bobby) the truth.

MEMORABLE LINES:

1.) "Kid, if your wife jumped me as fast as she did, your marriage was already over" from Yuri.
2.) "Men are idiots" from Bobbi, especially since from the average viewer's standpoint it'd be more than fair to say that Bobby hadn't done much (if anything) to deserve that.

FUNNIEST SCENES IN THIS EPISODE:

1.) Grandma Tan's reaction to Yuri's contention that the new owner will keep him on as super.
2.) Dr. Carlisle giving a book to Yuri after Yuri asks him for a reference.
3.) Yuri's "apology" to Bobby ("Look, I am very sorry for shtupping your wife").
4.) Grandma Tan complaining that she was going to miss her favorite show, and Bobbi pretending to understand.
5.) Yuri asking Bobby to bash his (Yuri's) brains in.

BLOOPER: There is no way Bobbi could have gotten into Yuri's apartment from the ladder as fast as she did.
