| Topaz is named for two words, Topasos, an island in the Red Sea, and "tapas" which is Sanskrit for fire. Topaz can be yellow, pink, brown, bluish, or greenish. The yellow is the most precious. The sherry-colored stones from Brazil can be turned pink if carefully heated. It is sometimes confused with yellow sapphire or citrine (quartz). Topaz has a hardness of 8. Its specific gravity is 3.4-3.6. It has a orthorhombic crystal system. | ||||||||||||
