August--the Peridot
Fe2SiO4   Mg2SiO4
The peridot is an olivine, named for the olive-green color.  It is idiochromatic, which means it is self-colored.  The color is not caused by an impurity.  The peridot is interesting because it can be made using iron or magnesium.  It has a hardness of 6 1/2 to 7.  Peridots are found on Zebirget Island, in the Red Sea, and Arizona.  Many of the gems were found in Hawaii.  It is prized there because it is considered the tears of a god.
