Development and Implementation of EMS

Even though Dashen Brewery has great concern about environmental issues from the time of errection,it was not developed as a system.The following are some of the techniques Dashen Brewey followed in the implementation process.

Dashen brewery's managment has proven its commitment from the very beginning to implement the Environmental Managment system.This committment is expressed in the environmental policy,which includes commitment to continual improvment ,prevention of pollutoion,and compliance with regulatory requirments.

Environmental Managment System was Established with the responsibility of developing and implementing Environmental Managment System in cooperation with the Managment representative.

• Training were given to managment commitment members and task force members in cooparation with Ethioian cleander production center.
• Initial environmental review was conducted to assess the whole process,work practices and their environmental significance
• Different aspects were identified and objectives and targets were set to control their implementation and improvment.
• Awarness creation activities about environmental and safety issues were conducted to employees .
• Internal audit was carried out to check the conformity of the implemented Environmental Manaagment System with ISO 14001 requirments and planned arrangement
.
• The brewery top managment performed managment review meetings to insure implementations ,effectiveness and continuational improvements of the environmental managment system.

During production of beer different wastes are produced which must be disposed in a proper manner. According to brewing science almost from five to twenty liters of water is being used to produce a liter of beer. This implies that for every liter of beer produced,four to nineteen liters of waste water is discharged as effluent. Moreover in the process of brewing this waste water picks acids,cleaning and disinfecting agents ,and caustic solutions, which are dangerous to the environment.If it is not properly handled.these wastes will affect the environment.

Dashen brewery has constructed a wastewater treatment plant with a cost of arround nine million Birr during the factory's establishement.

This enables the brewery to control its wastes in an environmental friendly manner. By controlling different parameters of the wastewater like PH,BOD,and temprature and by covering all operating costs of the treatment plant the brewery has been assuring the safety of the local community and the environment.

Dashen brewery has great concern about the ecological aspect of the brewery has established its nursery site in one of the Gondar weradas and participate in forestation activities .The plantation of indigenous trees in its compound and surrounding is as part of these activities.

The following are some of the activities performed by Dashen brewery concerning environmental issues and their results:

• Chain lubricant recycling is used as a means of waste reduction good housekeeping and to reduce resources consumption .
• suppliers evaluation about their environmental concern - purchasing of environmental friendly raw materials including packaging materials of different products from the suppliers . .
• The local farmers use the treated wastewater for irrigation and the sludge is also used for compound plantation and vehicle/compound cleaning.
• Using two sides of the paper for printing resulted in waste reduction,maintain good house keeping and reduce resources consumption.
• Training of employees on environmental issues increased awarness and environmental concern of employees; and better environmental performance.
• In addition to this ,efficient use of resources by appling cleander production concepts in all processes and using systematic control and disposal of wastes help in wastes help in waste reduction.good house keeping ,and reduce resources consumption.
• Using ISO 14001 based Environmental Managment System ensures the brewery's effort to comply with legal and other requirments.

INTEGRATING ISO 9001 WITH ISO 14001

The ISO 9001 Quality Managment System has greately assisted the brewery as foundation in implementing ISO 14001.Dashen found itself a long way towards ISO 14001 beacause of its established Quality Managment System.Eventhough there are differences between the two systems ,the managment system is generally consistent in both standards. ISO 9001 Quality Managment System is mainly aimed at meeting customer requirements, efficiency of production processes and emphasizes on continious improvement .On the other hand the ISO 14001 based Environmental Managment System focuses on identification and evaluation of environmental impacts ,compliance with regulatory and other requirements ,and continual improvement of targets generated by the organization in addition to customer expectations.

ISO 14001 ties the mandatory requirments into managment system that is made up of objectives,targets and programs focusing on meeting and exeeding mandatory requirements with the aim of pollution prevention and continious improvement .the overall aim of ISO 14001 is to support environmental protection and prevention of pollution in balance with socio-economic needs.

ISO 14001 uses the same fundamental system as ISo 9001 in some elements such as managment commitment, document control,control of records,policy statments ,communication,trainings,awareness and competence ;and corrective and preventive actions .Hence some emphasis of environmental issues was added to the already implemented Quality Managment System.

Our experiance has proven that an organization with ISO 9001 registration will be in advantageous position towards an ISO 14001 registration and other systems .With ISO9001 registration we assure that our customers will benefit from our quality product and service and with ISO 14001 registration we also assure our customers that their environment is not adversely affected by our business.We found ISO 14001 as an effective environmental managment system ,which can be integrated with Quality Managment system requirements to assist organizations to achieve environmental and economic goals.

Future plan in relation to EMS

Being certified is the begining of the journey for our business life.As the system itself requires we will use ISO 14001 certified managment system to identify problem areas, possible solution,and provide consistency in our approach towards environment.As we have done with ISO 9001 we will devote our ultimate effort towards promoting environmental protection and usage of only eco products by consumers.Te strategy to promote our business through environmental protection will be one of the emphasis areas of our brewery in the future.

In additio to this concerning our ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certified managment systems our plan is to go beyond ISO systems and eventually achieve Total Quality Managment System.And we will work to meet consistently the requirements of the internal and external customers , continiously improve the quality of service of all of our employees.
