ROGER MCGUINN: TREASURES
FROM THE FOLK DEN
Roger 'Jim' McGuinn co-founded the
Byrds in 1964. Now, some 37 years later, McGuinn is a solo artist on a mission
to save the song of the traditional folk genre.
It was as far back as 1981 that McGuinn grew up and tired of being part of a
touring band. It was at that point, bar a few outings with such luminaries as Bob
Dylan and Tom Petty, that he strapped on the guitar and walked a seemingly
never ending solo path through global venues and clubs.
In 1995, McGuinn began a process that carries on till this day. He started
recording, and uploading to the internet, a number of traditional folk songs
.. available @ the Folk Den as
part of McGuinn's independent
website
Due to the popularity of the
Folk Den, and the fact listeners needed a computer and credit card
to buy tracks, McGuinn teamed up with Appleseed Recordings and put together his
forthcoming CD, Treasures From The Folk Den.
The 18 song CD brings together Joan Baez, Judy Collins, Pete Seeger and
many more, in what Roger McGuinn describes as a project much like: "What
John and Alan Lomax had done back in the '30s. They'd gone out with an early
disk recording machine to record people in the Appalachians, singing almost
forgotten songs."
First track on Treasures From The Folk Den, a muso collaboration with Joan
Baez and Eliza Carthy, sets the high tone and faultless standards that never
falter through the rest of the CD.
The album is described as "a labour of love" by McGuinn and as
a "culmination of years of admiration and affection for the wonderful
artists who have honoured me by participating." A veritable love-in that
shines through every note and twang of this summery collection.
It's summer, it's festival time and it'll soon be time (August) to pop a finger
in your ear and sing-along-a-loud to Roger McGuinn's folk feast that is
.. Treasures From The Folk Den.
