FRAN
GRAY: SINGULAR ADVENTURES OF AN HONEST TALENT
There’s something about honesty. It stretches the muse in a way that
opens up the soul of the singer/songwriter to a multitude of creative
possibilities. And here, on Fran Gray’s ‘Singular Intent’,
the soul is bared via a cornucopia of musical styles and spot-on couplets.
Chicago-born Fran, who now resides in Portland, Oregon, has come
to world-wide attention via the wonder of the internet (particularly mp3.com). Singular
Intent, her first release of the new millennium, and third of her solo
career, is polished, accomplished and free of the techno-wizardry associated
with the net.
The jaunty opener In Your Room, belies the diversity of the remaining ten
tracks. Erica, Amazing Light and Shroud sing like Spring birds; hopeful,
hungry and optimistic. Yet, all are underplayed by a fine band of musicians;
Fran’s very much of the less-is-more philosophy.
When Fran lays back and lets others do the donkey-work .. this happens once on
the only non-authored track, ‘Blues Stay Away From Me’ .. she chills and
soars to a peak that’s brought her recognition from the
serious-&-intellectual-wing of the music press.
The second verse of In Your Room may describe Fran Gray the
best:
You seem full of strength but you're not a rock ... here's your refrain
Life is very hard who'd ever think you need a friend
Beaten by these circumstances and no one really knows
You take it all upon yourself and to the moon you go.
Maybe she’s a dreamer after-all, and not as tough as she comes across as captain
of her own career. If that’s the case, we can hope for many more years of
insecurities and blinding albums.
And we’re full-circle & back to honesty once more. Fran told the Oregon
City News: “ .. I keep my eyes on the light and keep going towards positive,
good things. And play, play, play.” In the case of Singular Intent
.. buy it and play, play, play.
