Apache/PHP/MySQL ... what fuels most of the internet

Many people would be the surprised what fuels a significant portion of the internet. This is known as LAMP. LAMP Linux, Apache, MySql and PHP (or Python or Perl). IT can just as easily be U(nix)AMP or W(indows)AMP.

Significant portion of software is said to be “Open Source”. Linux is perhaps the biggest such initiative. Many other open software initiatives have started from Linux. MySQL is an open source database. There is significant corporate support as a well especially for vendors like Oracle, IBM, Novell, Sun that have a significant Unix or Linux presence. Apache is bundled with Oracle software and Zend is an Oracle partner.

You or your company may not be committed to ASP.NET. You may not have a big budget or even a server and you may need to get applications deployed quickly. You may want to look at open source. You can have a full web server running on Linux or XP home! Make use of older PC's running NT or Windows 2000 or even Windows 98.

This is our recomended tutorial for those who want to try Linux. We may install on both Linux and Windows.

Web server (Apache Server or Abyss)

Installation and configuration of a Web Server. We can use IIS for Windows, if installed.

MySQL (Optional: Oracle Express 10g and SQL server 2000/2005)

Installation of MySQL and/or Oracle Express 10g. For a more indepth tutorial, we recommend the databases tutorial.

PHP

Installation of PHP and tutorial with connectivity to MySql, Sql Server, Oracle and ODBC.

Java J2EE using Tomcat

Java J2EE has a heavy presence in the open source market. We'll install Apache Tomcat and run a few Java Server Pages (JSP). The JSP examples will include datebase (JDBC) connectivity to MySql, Oracle and Sql Server. If you require more Java content, we recommend the Java tuorial

Ruby/Perl/Python (Optional)

We may look at these scripting languages as alternatives to PHP We will run simple programs and database connectivity to ODBC, MySql and Oracle

C/C++ Introduction (Optional)

We'll do a short optional C/C++ tutorial using Borland for Windows or the the built in Linux version of C/C++.

SQL Server 2005/2000 Express (Optional) Windows only. SQL Server express is free to use for Production use making it popular with PHP and Perl

Requirements:

Windows (Recommended): Windows 2000 or greater including XP or Vista. The preferred platform is XP Pro SP2.

Linux: We can do most of the setup on Ubuntu or Fedora ... Many Linux installations come bundled with LAMP. Advance notification required.
