Databases ... You don't need a big server to get started!


In the real world, your programs will most be likely accessing databases. So let's learn how to use three of the more popular ones: Oracle, SQL Server and MySQL.

This course will be more developer focused, instead of DBA. Default installation and starter databases will be used. Our goal is for a developer to setup a database environment without DBA assistance. All software is available free for production use!

Oracle, SQL Server and MySQL

A suggested training format is offered. However, specific needs can be looked at. Training will be done on Windows. We can proceed with Linux for Oracle or MySQL or if you prefer spend more time on Windows or move on to some application software. Choice is yours!

SQL Server (MSDE or 2005/2008 Express)

Database of choice for Microsoft.NET.

Installation and setup. Database creation and table creation, Queries and stored Procedures. ASP.NET and C# /VB queries.

Oracle Express 10g

Oracle is databases for ERP systems like SAP and Peoplesoft. Oracle systems mostly reside on Unix systems like Sun and IBM. But you can get started on Windows or Linux!

Installation and setup. Database creation and table creation. Queries and PL/SQL stored Procedures. Optional: (1) ASP.NET and C#/VB queries or (2) Java/JDBC queries or (3) PHP queries

If you plan on using an Oracle database, even if you use third party Products: Java, SAP, you can save developement effort by using PL/SQL.

MySQL

MySQL is the largest open source database. MySQL is used heavily on Linux based internet servers.

Installation and setup. Database creation and table creation. Queries and stored Procedures. Optional: (1) ASP.NET and C# queries or (2) Java/JDBC queries or (3) PHP queries

MS Access and SQLite: We'll show you to get the most of these light weight database packages. You don't even need MS Office for your Access database. These databases can your development running quickly.



Requirements:

Windows (Recommended): An version of Windows 2000 or greater including XP or Vista. The preferred platform is XP Pro SP2. SQLServer 2008 will only work on XP SP2 or Vista SP1. Administrator access is required to install SQL Server and Oracle. All databases can be accessed without administrator access

Linux: We can Oracle install on Ubuntu or Fedora ... MySQL is bundled with most Linux installations. Advance notification required....
