These next few pages are dedicated to sobriety, which is the central point of my life. As my wise sponsor (AA mentor) says, "We don't get sober to spend every minute of our lives in AA meetings..." which is to say that there IS life in sobriety!

Getting sober was frightening on so many levels; at the bitter end (my bottom), the only two options I saw were: leaping from a rooftop (presumably and hopefully to my death) or making a phone call to a sober friend. Both of those options represented death to me; the rooftop is obvious, and the call to the sober friend...well, I'd never been able to stop drinking, had been drinking since my youth, and didn't know how to live without alcohol.
As I prepared to go to the rooftop of my 8-story apartment building,
I experienced what I've since come to call a moment of GRACE...
a window of hope opened up, and instead of going on with my plan to end it all
--the last resort because I couldn't stop drinking on my own--
I made a phone call
I was taken to an AA meeting several hours later
That was January 21, 1997, and I've been doing the sobriety gig ever since
When anyone, anywhere, reaches out for help, I want the hand of AA to be there
