There are lots of theories about the causes of alcoholism; there are those who believe it is genetic, that it is learned behavior, and then those who see it as a lack of control. Let me say here and now that I believe that alcoholism is most often genetically inherited; this can be compounded by learned behavior, that is, one learns coping mechanisms from an environment. Anyone who thinks that alcoholism is "lack of control" clearly has not seen an alcoholic try to stay sober on their own, nor witnessed the dark places that an alcoholic succumbs to when in the vicious grips of their disease. My opinion is just that: an opinion. If you are looking for information on recovery from alcoholism for yourself or another person, please use a link at the bottom of this page, contact your physician, or the local AA phone number in your area.

Your diet plays a major role in your general mood, sense of well-being, and overall health. Consider talking to your physician, a nutrionist, or other health care professional about the best ways to boost your system. Think about it -- alcohol (and drugs, for those of us who used them, too) wreaks havoc on the body, robbing it of important vitamins and other life-sustaining and enhancing properties. Going through the basic blood tests to test for cholesterol levels, liver function, diabetes, among other things, may sound unpleasant, but it's a good start in improving your health, and protecting your sobriety!
Some well-meaning people will tell newly sober alcoholics to eat sugar --a piece of chocolate, some candy-- to stave off cravings for booze. That makes sense in a way, because alcohol has so much sugar in it. Rather than giving the body the alcohol, this school of thought says that the sugar will suffice. Just a word of advice, though... there are some other folks (me included) who believe that processed sugar can actually keep those cravings comin' on.

3) Fresh fruit & vegetables -- yes, I know that some of these also contain sugar, but it's not processed sugar, and fruit & vegetables will help you to get or stay regular! (nothing like keepin' the system flowing!); and
2) Protein -- however you get it, soy products, meats, fish, poultry, give your body real energy food;
4) Calcium -- again, there are different ways to get calcium, from milk to soy milk with calcium added. At the very least, add a daily supplement to your routine.
