DAY 3 - KETCHIKAN

Day 3 |

One of the several mosaic pillars
next to two of the pools.

This pool area (one of several) was beautiful.

Patty and Clint are ready for their first day in port!

Karen and David are already on their way out.
Those speedsters!

Mom is waving to the Carnival ship our old friends,
the Landgrens, are on, just in case they are looking.
They retired to St. George, too, and are in Mom's branch.

Clint and Michael looking like they are
already used to a life of leisure.

We each have to punch our card in to the machine
so the ship's computer knows exactly who is
on and off the ship at any moment.

Michael and Mom in Ketchikan.
Ketchikan is Alaska's first city and the
salmon capitol of the world.

Mom, the Kenningtons and we head out for our
day's excursion. It's the Eagles and Lighthouse tour.
And the boat is just coming in that we'll be taking.

And by golly, look who's just taken the tour before us,
Jennifer and Peter!

They brought their binocs to see what they could see.

Is it the eagle in the moon? No! It's a picture of an
eagle taken with Jen's camera through her binoculars!
Such a clever girl.

After their Eagles and Lighthouse tour
Jen went shopping in downtown Ketchikan,
finding some good deals while Pete went
trolling for King Salmon along the coastline.
He caught this 22 lb 36" long King Salmon!
It arrived fileted and flash frozen within one week
of returning home. After cleaning it, they ended up
with 15.5 lbs. of filet. The mounted fish should
arrive within one year's time.
It was a good thing this
was a Princess-sponsored excursion since the
fishing boats arrival was delayed (4:15 PM).
By the time Pete was finished filling out all the
paperwork for the fish it was 4:23; the ship
was to leave at 4:30. Pete hustled back to the
ship praying he'd get aboard before it left.
Half way back, he was met by the cruise line's
excursion director who determined that he
was the last person from the fishing boats
(and the very last person to board the ship, as it
turns out). He stepped aboard at 4:28 and the
ship pulled out at 4:31, turns out they keep track
of the people booked on their shore
excursions and will wait for them only.
In Juneau another passenger and a
crew member were left behind, they caught
up to the ship in Skagway a day later.

Patty watching for eagles, taking in the beauty,
and looking for Kodak moments.

I was thinking maybe I'd like to captain the boat for a while.
Do I look like I know what I'm doing? The REAL captain
plopped a hat on my head for the picture. He was funny.

Here's the lighthouse. I think we should have gotten
some of our money back since the lighthouse is
so short. It's not even completely mature yet!

We did see several eagles from a distance.
Here's one on top of the rock, but mostly
they were in the trees.

Meanwhile, the Davises, Barkers,
and Pimentels were at Totem Town.
This totem pole has a neat eagle on the top.

We came back to town, did a little shopping
(including the thrift store), and came back to the
ship to eat and relax before dinner. Here we have Ron,
Sarah, Linda, Laurel, and Michael.

There was a display of chocolate creations in the atrium
(the beautiful, 3-story center of the ship). I thought these
tools looked SO realistic! Just like old, rusty tools.

This Eiffel tower was also amazing.

There was often a string quartet or other live music playing in the atrium.

Dinner's over , the Barkers, Clint, and the
Pimentels deciding which show to go to.

There was a comedian almost every night.
They were pretty clean. Almost clean enough.
