"Our goal as tutors is to promote literacy and encourage children
to think positively. We want to encourage children to become
life-long learners and to realize that reading can be fun.
We want to improve literacy skills among children and leave them
with the motivation to continue their education after we are gone."
- Group of tutors at a 2004 training
Frontier College is a national literacy program based out of Toronto and has programs in many universities across Canada. The Nipissing University program in North Bay began in January 2001 and Laurentian University in Sudbury began its program in January 2002.
We recruit and train university volunteers to be tutors in a variety of situations: one-to-one programs, Reading Circles, Homework Clubs, and peer tutoring. Our primary focus in Sudbury and North Bay is on school-aged children, a sector that is not covered by government literacy programs.
In our training, tutors are taught to use the SCIL (Student Centred Individualized Learning) method. It is based on the strengths and interests of each student.
