Ode to Volunteers
Many will be shocked to find
When the day of judgment nears,
That there's a special place in heaven
Set aside for volunteers.
Furnished with big recliners,
Satin couches and footstools
Where there's no committee chair,
No group leaders or carpools.
No eager team that needs a coach,
No bazaar and no bake sale;
There will be nothing to staple
And not one thing to fold or mail.
Telephone lists will be outlawed,
But a finger snap will bring
Cool drinks and gourmet dinners
And rare treats fit for queen or king.
You ask, who'll serve those privileged few
And work for all they're worth?
Why, all those who reaped the benefits
And not once volunteered on earth.

The Starfish
On the beach hundreds of starfish lay; the remnants of a deadly tide. A young boy happening upon the tragic sight, never allowed himself to feel overwhelmed by the task at hand. He simply did what had to be done. Working one by one, he reached down picked up a starfish, and gently tossed it back to the ocean. A passerby said to the boy, "There are so many, how can you possibly make a difference?" Looking ahead as he tossed yet another starfish back in the sea, the boy smiled and said, "To this one I've made a difference."

Thanks, Volunteer
Thanks for all the little things,
The "done-and-then-forgotten" things,
The "oh-it's-simply-nothing" things
That make our days much brighter.
With unobtrusive,
friendly things,
And "never-mind-the-trouble" things,
And "won't-you-let-me-help-you" things,
You've made our hearts much later.
