We currently offer one-to-one tutoring to three elementary schools in the Sudbury area: Lansdowne, Queen Elizabeth, and Princess Anne Public Schools. University students trained by Frontier College are paired with a child in need of extra help in a wide variety of literacy-based areas. We have done some French work, English as a Second Language (ESL), helped children with learning difficulties, and encouraged others who were not able to keep up with their classmates.
At Lansdowne, we've expanded our services to include an after school Homework Club. Run as a drop-in centre at the school, we have university students on hand to help the children with their homework and to provide some guidance on how to work through assignments and projects. The Club is on Tuesdays from 3-4pm.
We also have a Reading Circle at the YWCA Genevra House, a transition house for women and children in crisis. Here we read one-on-one with children in the facility and play language related games. The Circle is on Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30pm.
The time commitment is small. We ask that you spend one hour a week tutoring the child. However, you can arrange to spend more time tutoring if you want. In some cases, tutors visit the schools several times a week or for a few hours at a time. Your commitment can be as big or as small as your schedule allows.
The program works on the University/College year. So tutoring hours are exclusive of exams and regular school breaks. However, you may choose to continue tutoring through the exam period in December and April.

We do most of our interviews and training for all programs in September, however, we do recruit again in January. At that time we typically look for one-to-one volunteers.
Tutoring, however, is not the only way to become involved in Frontier College at Laurentian. We can offer you many opportunities in the Organizational Team or as a volunteer for special events (like our annual Bowling Fundraiser) that we will hold throughout the year.
