Driving

You know that criminal is in town, but you don't know where he is.  So, you wait at an allied criminal organization house and follow him when he get out.

First, you have to select two cars to follow him.  The best cars will be faster, but the suspect will see you are following him faster so choose your cars carefully.

Let the chase begin!

You control the cars using the numeric key pad.  The numbers 2, 4, 6 and 8 indicate that the car should go south, west, east or north at the next corner.  5 or space changes which car you are controlling.  Use + and - to control the speed of your vehicle.  The * is used to make the arrest, but the front of your vehicle must be close to the front of the suspect vehicle.

The idea is to either follow the suspect to his house or to drive him off the road to make the arrest.  If you follow the suspect too close, the bar below the car picture will become red, showing that he notices that you are following him.  If it gets too red, then he will try to escape by accelerating.  If he notices that you are still on his tail, he might dash into a public restaurant to avoid you and you will have to start over again.

Done:

  • Map generation: It generates a map with buildings, random locations for criminal organizations houses, the CIA office or the airport.  It randomly decides which street segments are missing.
  • AI behavior: The suspect car will go to his destination unless he notices that you are following him.  In that case, he will try to disappear from your view until the detection meter goes down.
  • Car controls to turn, u-turn, accelerate, break, make the arrest or switch which car you are controlling.
  • Suspect car shadow indicating the last known position of the suspect's car.
  • Background music (.mp3) in played from the Music\Driving folder, but none are in there by default.

Left to do:

  • Tracking: Cars with tracking will automatically follow the suspect car by using the last known position and heading.
  • Sound effects.
  • Difficulty levels: The car you can choose from will be more easily detected by the suspect as you go up the difficulty levels.
  • Icon for the window.
  • Appropriate music that is free to redistribute.

Ideas for improvements:

  • Realistic traffic: Generate cars moving in random directions to make it harder to follow the right car.
  • Tailed victim: One of the infractions a criminal can do is to follow someone to determine the best time to kidnap him.  If you are following him when he does that, you can catch him in the act.  He will first go to the suspect house and follow him for a while.  As soon as he starts following the suspect, his role will be discovered and you will have enough evidence to arrest him.
  • Going to meetings and infractions: If you are at a suspect house when it is time for him to go to a meeting, he will go out of the house and you will have the choice of following him.

If he is going to a meeting, he will head for the airport.  If you follow him there, you will have the choice to follow him to another city and do another car chase in the city of his meeting.

If he is going to an infraction site, you will have the opportunity to catch him in the act by breaking into the building he is committing the infraction.

Thanks to:

  • GoogleEarth: That is where I found the building pictures.
  • CarPictures.com: That is where I found the car pictures shown in the car selection screen and in the right part of the driving screen.
