ASSYRIAN GEOGRAPHY

There is a considerable amount of specialist literature, attempting to interpret the geography of Assyrian inscriptions.  The major geographical influence is the mountain systems: the Euphrates is the only river to break through the Zagros (to the SE of Milid) in a very difficult gorge.  The main pass through the Zagros goes NW from modern Diyarbakir (Amedu).
