Word Processing

Word Processing is a computer application used for the production of any sort of viewable or printed material. (Including composition, editing, formatting, and possibly printing)

Word processing typically refers to text manipulation functions such as automatic generation of:

  • Batch mailing using a form letter template and an address database (mail merging);
  • Index of keywords and their page numbers;
  • Table of contents with section titles and their page numbers;
  • Table of figures with caption titles and their page numbers;
  • Cross-referencing with section or page numbers;
  • Footnote numbering.

Other word processing functions include "spelling checks" (actually checks against wordlists), "grammar checking" (checks for what seem to be simple grammar errors), and the "thesaurus" (allows you to find words with similar or opposite meanings).

By using word processing, it is easy to edit the text if there is any mistakes, compare to a typewrite which you have to retype the entire text. Characters, words or paragraphs can be moved, deleted, copied and rearranged by using simple appropriate commands. Easy to find a word and replace it. Easy to format the characters such as bold or italic, and easy to insert object like pictures or charts.

Spreadsheet

A spreadsheet is a rectangular table (or grid) of information, often financial information, to create documents using computers.

Spreadsheet applications are computer programs that let you create and manipulate spreadsheets electronically. In a spreadsheet application, each value sits in a cell.
