My interest
in Native Americans started as a child
I often saw a vision of an Indian chief in front of me,
on what I call my screen. He would just appear, not
saying anything, but giving me guidance and knowledge
from his soul to mine. He appeared very often for many
years when I was a child up through my twenties. Today
he only appears now and then, but I always know it
he is watching over me, gently guiding me, if I am
accepting. I consider him not only my spiritual guide
but I believe he was possibly my father in another life.
Whatever ones believes is irrelevant as this vision
has brought much solace and wisdom into my life. I
feel a deep kinship with the Native American way of life
and once even lived in a tipi. I appreciate there love
of the earth and all its creatures. I have worked in
a Native American Gallery alongside with Native
Americans, who honored their heritage and from
whom I learned considerably. Thank you, Scott (Big Apache)
and Roxxi (Iron Feather) for your wealth of information, your
pride, and your spirit.

White hummingbird by Frank HowellThe Hummingbird
In Mayan teachings, Hummingbird is connected to the Black Sun and the Fifth World. Hummingbird can give us the medicine to solve the riddle of the contradiction of duality. It is said that Hummingbird conjures love as no other medicine does, and that Hummingbird feathers open the heart. Without an open and loving heart, you can never taste the nectar and pure bliss of life.
Bear Clan by Jody Bergsma
The Bear
In Zuni mythology, the Bear clan is believed to be in charge of the seasonal changes that bring the cold weather and snow, as well as of the diseases that frequently accompany them. As such, the bear is associated with change - it goes into hibernation in the late fall and emerges at winter's end. Though it is associated with the disease of this seasonal period, Bear is seen not as their cause but as having the power to heal those and other illnesses. Bear seeks honey, or the sweetness of truth, within the hollow of an old tree. In the winter, when the Ice queen reigns and the face of death is upon the Earth, Bear enters the womb-cave to hibernate, to digest the year's experience. To become like Bear and enter the safety of the womb-cave, we must attune ourselves to the energies of the Eternal Mother, and receive nourishment form the placenta of the Great void. The Great void is the place where all solutions and answers live in harmony with the questions that fill our realities. If we choose to believes that there are many questions to life, we must also believe that the answers to these question reside within us. Many tribes call this space of inner-knowing the Dream Lodge, where the death of the illusion of physical reality overlays the expansiveness of eternity.
Earth Teach Me to Remember
Earth teach me stillness as the grasses are stilled with light.
Earth teach me suffering as old stones suffer with memory.
Earth teach me humility as blossoms are humble with beginning.
Earth Teach me caring as the mother who secures her young.
Earth teach me courage as the tree which stands alone.
Earth teach me limitation as the ant which crawls on the ground.
Earth teach me freedom as the eagle which soars in the sky.
Earth teach me resignation as the leaves which die in the fall.
Earth teach me regeneration as the seed which rises in the spring.
Earth teach me to forget myself as melted snow forgets its life.
Earth teach me to remember kindness as dry fields weep in the rain.

The White Buffalo Legend
All animals are sacred, but in many traditions White Buffalo is the most sacred. The appearance of White Buffalo is a sign that prayers are being heard, that the sacred pipe is being honored and that the promises of prophesy are being fulfilled. White Buffalo signals a time of abundance and plenty.
Everlasting Love by Jody BergsmaThe Swan
Little Swan flew through the Dreamtime, looking for the future. She rested for a moment in the coolness of the pond, looking for a way to find the entry point to the future. This was a moment of confusion for Swan, as she knew that she had happened into the Dreamtime by accident. This was her first flight alone and she was a bit concerned by the Dreamtime landscape. As Swan looked high above Sacred Mountain, she saw the biggest swirling black hole she had ever seen. Dragonfly came flying by, and Swan stopped him to ask about the black hole. Dragonfly said, "Swan, that is the doorway to the other planes of imagination. I have been guardian of the illusion for many moons. If you want to enter there, you would have to ask permission and earn the right." Swan was not so sure that she wanted to enter the black hole. She asked Dragonfly what was necessary for her to earn entry. Dragonfly replied, "You must be willing to accept whatever the future holds as it is presented, without trying to change Great spirit's plan." Swan looked at her ugly little duckling body and then answered, "I will be happy to abide by Great spirit's plan. I won't fight the currents of the black hole. I will surrender to the flow of the spiral and trust what I am shown." Dragonfly was very happy with Swan's answer and began to spin the magic to break the pond's illusion. Suddenly, Swan was engulfed by a whirlpool in the center of the pond. Swan reappeared many days later, but now she was graceful and white and long-necked. Dragonfly was stunned! "Swan, what happened to you!' he exclaimed. Swan smiled and said "Dragonfly, I learned to surrender my body to the power of Great Spirit and was taken to where the future lives. I saw many wonders high on Sacred Mountain and because of my faith and my acceptance I have been changed. I have learned to accept the a state of grace.
The Wolf
Always in the position of the "new light," taken in any of its meanings - sunrise, new ides, or truth - White Wolf also embodies the spirit of learning, of both receiving and teaching the truth. When White wolf chooses to teach, it does so in a very particular way; always the first to see and alert us to a clear light, white Wolf does not necessarily tell us how to use that light. It is a little like the coming of each new day itself; we are given it without our asking, but we are not told how to use it, how to integrate it into our lives. White Wolf's truths are usually communicated to us in the form of a "flash of insight" or a "glimpse" of a reality we had not previously seen. Like a bolt of lightning, such insights can change our lives, though we may have to do some hard work to integrate these new understandings with what we have known before. Although wolves are mysterious creatures, they possess qualities that are remarkably humanlike.
They are highly individualistic, having personalities, physical appearances, and ways of communicating that set them apart form each other. They are highly intelligent, possessing extraordinary problem-solving skills, and they are playful. They are loving parents, with both male and female taking great pains, for many moths after a litter is born, to educate their young in the ways of the world. Thus, they are excellent mediators when there are family matters to be handled. Wolves have the capacity to express a wide range of emotion, including caring and love, steadfast loyalty, sadness, worry, grief, joy, and humor. They even laugh. They are genuine, directly reflecting their inner truths rather than being "put on" for an effect. They are social animals, forming and maintaining communities with their own kind, while maintaining strict devotion to a particular mate and their family.
Sweetdreams by Jody BergsmaThe Dreamcatcher Legend
Dreams have always held meaning to Native Americans. One of the Old traditions was to hang a dream catcher above an infant's bed or cradle board to protect them from bad dreams. In some traditions the legend says that the good dreams know their way through the web and pass into the dreamer through the feather. The bad dreams get caught in the web and are destroyed by the first morning light. In other traditions, the legend is opposite of the first story. This legend says that the good dreams get caught in the web, while the bad dreams float on by without affecting the dreamer. In the morning the dreamer would rub his or her hands on the web of the dream cat her to receive the energy of the good dreams.
