A descendant of John W. Wheeler writes: "It was interesting to learn that Thomas M. Wheeler was apprenticed as a wheelwright and a farmer. I would imagine that the skills he learned as a wheelwright apprentice would enable him to find employment with the iron works in Dickson or Wayne County. Of course, there is no proof that Thomas worked at the iron works of either county, but he owned farmland in Wayne County. It would appear that at least some of Thomas' mechanical skill was passed on to his oldest son. John William was a blacksmith of some note. Not only did he engage in normal blacksmithing such as tool making, general repair and farrier work, but he also made and repaire shoes for two-legged critters. My mother remembers the shoe forms he brought to Idaho.
John William ran a general store in the 1880s in Garfield, Orgon Co., Missouri and then owned and operated a blacksmith business in Many Springs, in Oregon County in the 1890s. He and my mother's father (Samuel Pleasant Hudson) owned a livery business and two farms in McCurtin Co., Okla. from 1902until they moved to Idaho in 1914.
He was well read and wrote a beautiful hand. His manners were those of a gentleman. He didn't drink and he didn't cuss. My mother assumes these traits were important to his parents and given he oral history that his mother was a teacher, it makes sense that he was perhaps better educated than some during that era. He was not a tall man, considerably less than six feet in height, nor was he heavy. He had a dark complexion and dark hair. In his advanced years, his hair was snow white with a receding hairline. He wore a full beard during his later years. He suffered from cataracts, as did his mother and was legally blind by 1926, eight years before his death.
Thomas M. and Louisa Wheeler lived near a Baptist Church on Indian Creek in Wayne Co., Tenn., but they are not listed on the membership roll. Louisa's sister, Martha Tycer Nesbitt was very active in this church and I have always wondered why Louisa and Thomas wasn't involved. John William told my mother that he attended church regularly until he was accused of attending while drunk. Apparently he was late for church one morning and sat toward the back of the building near an open window rather than with the rest of the family. Soon after, an inebriated fellow made his way to a shady spot on the side of the church and sat down under that very window - the smell of liquor wafting in the window was obvious and since my g-grandfather was closest to the window and not sitting with the family, he was accused of imbibing. He told my mother that he was so furious about being unjustly accused that he never attended church again.
My maternal grandmother, Rachel Alice Wheeler Hudson was the only surviving child born to John William and Misinair N. Wheeler . She and her mother attended the Methodist Church while in Missouri and Oklahoma. Unfortunately, there were no Protestant churches near the farm in southeast Idaho (predominantly Mormon). When my mother was in grade school, a protestant minister began visiting the farming community where they lived, holding Sunday school at the local school. This is where she and her siblings attended Sunday school. My mother later became a member of the First Baptist Church ..."
