When the 1850 census was taken, he was a farmer in Marshall Co., Tenn. He was living next to his parents. The Agricultural Census of 1860 indicated his personal property was valued at $250. He he owned $60 worth of farm machinery and one horse and one mule. He also owned livestock valued at $350 and had 10 bushels of wheat and 100 bushels of corn on hand. The value of his "assets" was said to have been $660.
When the Civil War broke out he did not volunteer to fight. It is said that the depredations committed by the Confederate soildiers caused him to change his mind. On 20 April 1863 he enlisted in the Union Army. He was mustered in as a private in Company F of the 1st Alabama and Tennessee Videtto Cavalry. His personal description upon enlistment showed him to be six feet tall with gray eyes with dark complexion and hair. Very few records survive to tell the story of the company to which Ezekiel belonged. Although he himself was said to have told that he was at the Battle of Shiloh, that Battle was fought on 6-7 of April 1862, a whole year after he enlisted. He was mustered out at Stevenson, Alabama on 16 June 1864. Ezekiel later received a pension of $12 per month for his War service. Several years later it was increased to $20.
The Wheelers remained in Marshall County for several years after the War. They moved to Carrsville, in Livingston Co., Kentucky in 1869 and lived there for five years. In the winter of 1874-75 they moved on to McCormick, Illinois. It was said they made the trip from Kentucky "in true emigrant style, with two teams of horses and covered wagons." They owned a small farm in Kentucky which they sold and then bought forty acres in Township 11 of Pope County, Illinois.
After Rachel's death in 1898 Ezekiel moved with his son, William Thomas, to Anna, Illinois. It is said he would use his pension money to buy candy, which he would dole out. One descendant remembers the house in McCormick as a one room house with a fireplace and with a bed in every corner. She also remembers the strict observance of the Sabbath as the Wheelers were "old school" Presbyterian.

Henry GOOCH was shot through the head and killed at Slaughtersville last Friday night and his body found the next morning near the railroad bridge in the south end of that town. Shots were heard at the time. GOOCH has had an unenviable and a desperate career and it was his son Jody GOOCH who shot and killed Renn ASHBY and wounded Marshal Bill McGARY of that town not long since. Henry GOOCH had been warned to leave the country, but came back and met his fate. There is no clew as to the perpetrator of the deed and public sentiment in that section does not seems to call for a very thorough investigation.
