(Continued)

89. Elizabeth "Betsy" Wheeler ( , William , Martin , John , John , Henry ) was born 1 about 1794 in Granville Co., North Carolina. She died after 1860 in Rutherford Co., Tennessee.

It is not proven these were her parents. However, this is the only Wheeler family that lived in Granville Co. at the time that is undocumented.

Elizabeth married 1 Richard Arnold on 4 Aug 1818 in Granville Co., North Carolina. Richard was born about 1794 in Virginia. He died after 1860 in Rutherford Co., Tennessee. Richard was counted in a census 2 in 1820 in Granville Co., North Carolina. He was counted in a census 3 in 1840 in Bedford Co., Tennessee. He was counted in a census 4 in 1850 in Cannon Co., Tennessee. He was counted in a census 5 in 1860 in Rutherford Co., Tennessee.

He was enumerated in the Dutch District of Granville Co., N.C. on the 1820 census. According to that census they already had 4 children. They had already left Granville County before the 1830 census was taken. They were living in Bedford Co., Tenn. when the 1840 census was taken. There were seven young males and 3 young females in his household. He was a buyer at the sale of the estate of Hugh Robinson in Cannon County in Aug 1848.

They had the following children:

+ 335 F i Eliza Ann Arnold
+ 336 M ii America Arnold
337 M iii Arnold was born 1 about 1824 in Tennessee.

Cecelia married 3 Henry Wheeler 1, 2 son of Martin Wheeler and Celia Jones on 7 Aug 1817 in Granville Co., North Carolina. Henry was born about 1801 in Granville Co., North Carolina. He died after 1860. Henry was counted in a census 4 in 1820 in Granville Co., North Carolina. He was counted in a census 5 in 1830 in Granville Co., North Carolina. He was counted in a census in 1840 in Bedford Co., Tennessee. He was counted in a census in 1850 in Limestone Co., Alabama. He was counted in a census 6 in 1860 in Limestone Co., Alabama.

Henry Wheeler was listed on the 1820 Granville Co. census with a wife and two children - a son and a daughter. On the 17th of June 1822, Henry Wheeler borrowed $45.14 from his brother-in-law, Radford Gooch.
He mortgaged his inheritance to Ransom Parrish as security for the debt. When the 1830 census was taken, there were 3 children living in his household as well as three unidentified adults. He migrated to middle Tennessee along with the other members of his family but exactly when he left Granville County is not known. He was still in Granville County in 1837 when he was paid for cutting the hay on the land of Clayborn Parrish, deceased. (Aug. Court 1837) Henry Wheeler paid taxes in the Ledge of Rocks District of Granville Co. through 1838. By 1840 he was living in Bedford Co., Tenn. There were numerous Granville Co. families who found new homes in this area. Henry stayed here for a few years then he and his cousin, Jesse Wheeler, moved south to Limestone Co., Ala. When the 1850 Limestone Co. census was taken there was a William Wheeler age 11, and a Celia B. Wheeler age 5, both b. in Tenn., in Henry's household. It is not known if these were his children, or perhaps his grandchildren.
In 1860 Henry's occupation was listed as "miller."

They had the following children:

345 M i Unknown Male Wheeler was born 1 before 1820 in Granville Co., North Carolina.

[It has not been proved these were his parents.] He was in Lincoln Co., Tenn. before 19 June 1844. On that day a survey was filed in his name for 40 acres of land adjoing the land where he was living. It was described as being on the waters of the West fork of the Flint River.
He was counted in a census in 1850 in Lincoln Co., Tennessee. The value of his real estate was listed as being $150. He was counted in a census in 1860 in District 19 of Lincoln Co., Tennessee. Two grandchildren were living with them: Amanda, age 10, and James, age 8.

Wiley married Mary "Polly" Hall on 26 Oct 1816 in Wake Co., North Carolina. Mary was born 1 about 1796 in North Carolina. She died in 1870/1880 in Lincoln Co., Tennessee.

He was counted in a census 3 in 1870 in Farmington, Marshall Co., Tennessee.

[It has not been proven these were his parents.] About 1833 the Wheeler family moved to Bedford Co., Tenn. and by 1850 they were living in Marshall Co., Tenn.
The 1860 Agricultural Census of Wayne Co., Tenn. showed that he had 20 acres of improved land 42 acres of "other." The total value of his land at that time was $300 while his personal property was valued at $400. He owned $70 worth of farm machinery, 2 horses and 2 oxen. The value of his livestock was $250. He also had 7 bushels of wheat and 150 bushels of corn at the time. The value of his "assets" was given as $1,020.

100. Jemimia Oakley 1 (Winifred Wheeler , William , Martin , John , John , Henry ) was born about 1798 in Person Co., North Carolina.

She was living with her sister M.F. in 1860. [At least a Jemima Jones, age 60, born in North Carolina, was living with them. In 1850 "Jamima" and Elias Jones are enumerated on the census in Bedford County. On the same page are several Wood families. Elias and Jemima had a son William age 19 and a son James A age 8. Also in the household was a 75 year old Catherine __ and a 35 year old Rebecca Hopkins.] To date I have been unable to locate a Jemima and M. Woods. In 1840 Elias Jones was enumerated in Marhsall Co., Tenn. In addition to a wife there are 5 others under age 20 in the household.

Jemimia married 1 (1) M. Woods about 1812.

Jemimia married (2) Elias Jones about 1823 in . Elias died before 1860 in Bedford Co., Tennessee.

It is possible they had a son David C. Jones (born abt 1825).

Elias and Jemimia had the following children:

+ 357 M i David C. Jones
358 ii Jones was born 1 in Marshall Co., Tennessee.
359 iii Jones was born 1 about 1830 in Marshall Co., Tennessee.

101. Martin Wheeler Oakley 1, 2 (Winifred Wheeler , William , Martin , John , John , Henry ) was born about 1805 in Person Co., North Carolina. He died on 28 Sep 1865 in Marshall Co., Tennessee. He was buried in the Oakley cemetery which is located 4 miles north of Farmington in Marshall County.. Martin was counted in a census 3 in 1840 in Marshall Co., Tennessee. He was counted in a census in 1850 in District 7, Marshall Co., Tennessee. He was counted in a census 4 in 1860 in District 7, Marshall Co., Tennessee.

At the age of 31, Martin Wheeler Oakley was the first County Clerk of Marshall County. He was elected on 3 Oct 1836 at the organization of the first County Court in Marshall County. At age 44, he was appointed a Justice of the Peace. His farm was located about 10 miles north of Lewisburg and about 5 miles south of Chapel Hill, Tenn. When the Civil War started, even at age 56, he did his part. He served as Conscript Officer and bought supplies for the Confederate Army. He also took his slaves and oldest grandson, 13 year old Alexander C. Robinson, and went south to build breast-works for the southern troops and to help in any way he could. At home, his wife Elizabeth did her part. She slipped food to the southern boys, thru the Union line, with the help of a slave. [Some information on this family came from Micky Coble in which she said "an added record is knowledge of Mrs. Ross Hopkins and which she has handed the compiler and is as follows ... His wife, Elizabetrh Jones Oakley ... was a relative of Gen. N.B. Forrest and Gen. Joe Wheeler .. Mama always told me this ... ." However, the genealogy of his family, compiled by General Joe Wheeler and his wife shows no connection to Nathan Bedford Forrest or to this Wheeler family.]

Martin married Elizabeth Martin Jones 1, 2 daughter of Aaron Jones and Silvia Wheeler in 1828 in Bedford Co., Tennessee. Elizabeth was born about 1810 in Granville Co., North Carolina. She died on 23 Jun 1883 in Marshall Co., Tennessee. She was buried in the Oakley cemetery which is located 4 miles north of Farmington in Marshall County..

They had the following children:

+ 364 F i Martha Adeline Oakley is printed as #314.

102. Lively Oakley 1 (Winifred Wheeler , William , Martin , John , John , Henry ) was born 2 about 1813 in Person Co., North Carolina. She died in 1850/1860 in Marshall Co., Tennessee.

She was listed in the household of her parents in 1850, along with her son Francis Marion. In 1860 he was the head of household and she was living with F.M. and his family.

Lively married 1, 2 Lewis Reynolds about 1833 in Bedford Co., Tenn.. Lewis was born about 1810. He died before 1850 in .

They had the following children:

+ 365 M i Francis Marion Reynolds

372 M vii A.J. Stephens was born 1 in 1858 in Bedford Co., Tennessee.

104. Mary "Polly" Wheeler 1 (Martin , William , Martin , John , John , Henry ) was born 2 on 7 Aug 1797 in Granville Co., North Carolina. She died 3 on 3 Feb 1870 in Davidson Co., Tennessee. She was buried in Hamilton Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mary married 2 Wiley E. Wheeler 1 son of Benjamin Wheeler Sr. and Winifred Turner on 11 Sep 1816 in Granville Co., North Carolina. Wiley was born 3 on 13 Apr 1797 in Granville Co., North Carolina. He died 4 on 24 Oct 1870 in Davidson Co., Tennessee. He was buried in Hamilton Methodist Church Cemetery. Wiley was counted in a census 5 in 1820 in Dutch District, Granville Co., North Carolina. He was counted in a census 6 in 1840 in Williamson Co., Tennessee. He was counted in a census 7 in 1850 in Davidson Co., Tennessee. He was counted in a census 8 in 1860 in Davidson Co., Tennessee. He was counted in a census 9 in 1870 in Davidson Co., Tennessee.

When Willie reached the age of twenty-one his father Benjamin sold him a piece of land containing 58 1/4 acres. This was located "on the waters of Ledge of Rock Creek" bordering on George Bearden and ___ Gay. Things apparently did not go well for the newlyweds. From the May session of court, on Tuesday, 8 May 1821, the following is found: (I have inserted some punctuation to make reading easier.)

"Whereas, the following Executions having been returned to this court
against Willie Wheeler, viz (that is) two executions in favor of Benjamin
Wheeler vs Willie Wheeler for the sum of fifty dollars each, with interest,
from 30th day of November 1918 till paid, and 40 cents costs. And the other
in favor of Benjamin Wheeler for twelve dollars eighty cents, with interest
from 5 day March 1821, till paid, and 40 cents costs. Two others in favor

following endorsement, viz: for want of goods and chattles, the within
execution is based on the lands and tenements of Wilie Wheeler supposed to
be 58 3/4 acres of lands lying on the waters of Big Ledge of Rock Creek
adjoining the lands of Benjamin Wheeler and Charles Beardin
R.F.P. Jones, Constable
5 April 1821

Judgement of the Court that the Sheriff expose to public sale the
aforesaid tract of land containing 58 3/4 acres so as to compel the
payments of the aforesaid _____ as above stated and costs, as well
as all ensuing costs thereon and that he make return thereof to next
court.

On the 22nd day of October 1821, Benjamin and Willie Wheeler sold the property to George Robertson for $225.00. When county taxes were assessed in 1823, Willie Wheeler was taxed on 112 acres of land in Nap of Reeds. This appears to be the 112 acres of land owned by his father-in-law, Martin, at the time of his death. The property was valued at $224 and the taxes amounted to 65 cents.
After living there for several years Willie and Mary Wheeler sold their interest in "the land descending to us out of the dower of Celia Wheeler laid off to her out of the lands of the said Martin Wheeler, deceased", to her brother Moses Wheeler for $86.25. Willie and Mary then moved their family a few miles away into the edge of Orange Co., N.C. where they lived for ten to twelve years. While living there, Willie Wheeler was witness for several marriages.
Between 13 Mar 1837, when their last son was born in N.C., and 22 Oct 1839, when their last dau. was b. in Tenn., they joined the migration west along with a number of their siblings. The first record of them in Tenn. was when the 1840 census was taken. They were living in Williamson Co. Nearby was Willie's brother James.
By the time the 1850 census was taken Willie and Mary were living in Davidson Co. Children listed in the household were 21 year old Mary; 18 year old Lorenzo; 13 year old Wiley; and 13 year old Dicy. When the 1860 census was taken their circumstances were greatly improved over what they had been at the start of their married life. On 25 Oct 1858, Willie had bought a piece of land in the 3rd Civil District of Davidson Co., containing a little over 76 acres, from John S. Shacklett. The price of the property was $2,205, which was to be paid in three installments. However, the Civil War and the unrest preceding it seems to have brought hard times and ruined his plans again. In August 1865, he turned this property over to a trustee, Isaac Whitworth, for a period of one year while he tried to come up with the money to pay debts owed to James Chandler and James Holloway. Whether he was able to do that is not known but in December 1867 he sold the piece of land, containg 76 acres 80 poles, to James Holloway for $2,295. Willie did not leave a written will.
When the 1870 census was taken on July 14th,Wiley was living with his son Benj. Martin Wheeler in the 5th Civil District of Davidson Co., Tenn. He was 73 years old.

They had the following children:

+ 373 M i Benjamin David Martin Wheeler is printed as #277.
+ 374 M ii Hiram William Wheeler is printed as #278.
375 M iii Joseph Thomas Wheeler is printed as #279.

381 M ix Robert Potter Wheeler is printed as #285.
382 F x Edy Francis Wheeler is printed as #286.
+ 383 M xi Wiley W. Wheeler is printed as #287.
+ 384 F xii Dicy Mai Wheeler is printed as #288.

105. Elizabeth Wheeler 1, 2, 3 (Martin , William , Martin , John , John , Henry ) was born about 1798 in Granville Co., North Carolina. She died after 1830. Elizabeth was counted in a census 4 in 1830 in Orange Co., North Carolina.

Elizabeth married 3 F. Radford Gooch 1, 2 son of John Gooch and Judith Radford on 11 May 1816 in Granville Co., North Carolina. F. Radford Gooch was born 4 about 1786 in Amelia Co., Virginia. He died in Feb 1822 in Granville Co., North Carolina. F. Radford Gooch was counted in a census 5 in 1820 in Granville Co., North Carolina.

As stated in the record of her father, Radford Gooch was was appointed guardian of 5 of her siblings. He was also guardian of a number of other children in the area. When the 1820 census was taken, Radford Gooch was listed as being 26-45 years of age. He had 5 slaves and 2 "free persons of color" (females under 10 years of age) as well as two males 0-10 and one male (who is believed to be his brother's son) age 10-16, living in his household. There was also a female over 45 years old living in his home, possibly his deceased brother's wife. The name of Radford Gooch appears numerous times in the court records of Granville Co. On 6 Nov 1820, he was one of several persons "appointed inspector of the polls ... at the ensuing elections for the voters to elect a president & vice president of the United States". On 11 Nov 1820, his name was drawn for jury duty at next term of court. On 5 Feb 1821, his name was drawn for Grand Jury duty. Radford Gooch was "duly elected constable in Nap of Reeds District for this year" at the Feb Court 1821. At the May Court 1821, he was "qualified as the constable to attend the Grand Jury this term". On 4 Feb 1822, he was one of the men appointed to audit the accounts of Thomas Bowden, the executor of the estate of one Richard Hutchinson, and make a report to the court. Three days later he was granted a license to "retail spirits at his house for one year". The same court appointed him constable in the Ledge of Rocks District for "the present year". Radford and Elizabeth Gooch lived on Indian Grave Trail, on land adjoining Joseph Ellis and William Jones. Radford Gooch was still alive on the 17th of June 1822 when his brother-in-law, Henry, borrowed money from him (see Henry's record) but died in late 1823 or in the early months of 1824. At the February term of court 1824, the petition for dower was filed. It stated that Radford Gooch owned between three & four hundred acres of land on Nap of Reeds Creek when he died. It adjoined the lands of Nathaniel Waller and others. But when the jury met to lay off the dower on 12 March 1824, they only allowed the widow 48 & 2/3 acres with "the dwelling house, kitchen, and other out houses". This land adjoined ____ Ellis, _____ Bullock, and ___ Waller. Since the dower was 1/3 of the land, this would be 1/3 of 144 acres. In this same record, Robert F. P. Jones was appointed guardian of the minor children, Emmet and Paul. He was md. to Elizabeth's first cousin Ailsey Jones, dau. of Moses & Dicy (Wheeler) Jones. On the 27th of April 1825, Elizabeth sold to her brother, Moses, "for the sum of sixty five dollars ... all my right, title, interest, & claims to the land descending to me out of the estate of Martin Wheeler, deceased ...". When the 1830 census was taken Elizabeth Wheeler, who by this time was between 30 and 40 years of age, was living in the "North District" of Orange Co., N.C. She and her two sons were living next door to her brother America. Just a few doors away was Wilie Wheeler and his family. So far I have been unable to prove where Elizabeth Wheeler spent the next 40 years of her life or just when she died. When the 1870 census was taken a "Betsy" Gooch, age 70, was living in Tally Ho, in Granville Co., in the household of Emett Gooch, Elizabeth's son.

They had the following children:

+ 385 M i Paul Gooch
+ 386 M ii Emmett Gooch

106. Moses Wheeler 1, 2, 3, 4 (Martin , William , Martin , John , John , Henry ) was born about 1800 in Granville Co., North Carolina. He died before 1865 in Granville Co., North Carolina. Moses was counted in a census 5 in 1850 in Tar River District, Granville Co., North Carolina.

By Aug Court 1827, Moses was serving as guardian for his sisters, Rebecca and Celia. He continued in this role until the Feb Court 1833, when Rebecca was 18 years old.
At the estate sale of Moses Bonner, on 4 Dec 1827, Moses Wheeler bought a fiddle for $4.80, and a bed & furniture for $14.90.
In the will of Thomas Jenkins, written 14 April 1828, he bequeathed "to my daughter, Elizabeth Wheeler, five shillings ... and at the death of my daughter Polly Jenkins it is my will and desire that my grandson Thomas Moses Wheeler shall have and receive all the property that I have willed to my daughter Polly Jenkins. ... It is my wish that my daughter Polly will keep my daughter Elizabeth with her provided she will stay peaceable and contented, if not she shall be at liberty to discard her at any time." Apparently it was not a happy marriage for Moses Wheeler and his first wife. He was listed on p. 16 of the 1830 Granville Co., N.C. census as a 20-30 year old male, living alone.
In the Superior Court records of 11 Mar 1831, his wife, Elizabeth Jenkins Wheeler, filed for divorce.

In light of the statement in her father's will, maybe all the blame did not lie with Moses Wheeler. Nine days later, on 21 March 1831, Moses md. 2nd, Elvira Landers.
On Thursday, 5 March 1840, Moses Wheeler was indicted for "an assault" and pled guilty. It was "ordered by the Court that the defendant pay a fine of five dollars & costs of prosecution". There was no indication of who he assaulted.
Moses Wheeler spent his whole life as a farmer in Granville Co. On the 1850 Granville Co. census, he was found on p. 319, dwelling 6, family 6, in the Tar River District.
He wrote his will on 2 Feb 1865. Although the will does not read as such, he may have been ill at the time he wrote it because he died a few months later. The will, which reads as follows, was probated at the Nov Court 1865.

I, Moses Wheeler, of the County of Granville and State of N.C., do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following to wit
Item 1st - I lend to my wife Elvira during her natural life the tract of land lying near and adjoining the lands of my son Dudley and at her death I give the said tract of land to my grandson William T. Wheeler son of my said son Dudley with this understanding. That at the death of my said wife the tract of land is to be valued by three freeholders to be chosen by my Executor and my said grandson is to pay my daughter Elizabeth Meadows one half of said valuation. Said one half may be paid by and from the rent of the said lands or from any other source except by sale of the same as I do not wish it sold for division being too small a tract for division between them and my desire being to secure said tract of land to my said grandson.
Item 2nd - The tract of land whereon I now live I give and bequeath to my two daughters, Eliza and Hannah, to be equally divided between them. Said tract of land to be valued by three disinterested persons to them and their heirs forever.
Item 3rd - I give and bequeath to my other two daughters, Larceny [Larcena] and Harritt, in cash, the value of the said land given to Eliza and Hannah to be paid out of money in hand. Debts due me in other property at alike valuation, my object being to make them equal in valuation. Should the currency of the country then be as it is at this time, then that fact shall be taken into consideration.
Item 4 - After making Larceny [Larcena] and Harritt equal with Eliza and Hannah, then I want all the balance of my estate equally divided between my wife, my son Dudley and my five daughters, as before named.
