107. Henry Wheeler 1, 2 (Martin , William , Martin , John , John , Henry ) was born about 1801 in Granville Co., North Carolina. He died after 1860. He was counted in a census in 1840 in Bedford Co., Tennessee. He was counted in a census in 1850 in Limestone Co., Alabama. He was counted in a census 5 in 1860 in Limestone Co., Alabama.

Henry Wheeler was listed on the 1820 Granville Co. census with a wife and two children - a son and a daughter. On the 17th of June 1822, Henry Wheeler borrowed $45.14 from his brother-in-law, Radford Gooch.
He mortgaged his inheritance to Ransom Parrish as security for the debt. When the 1830 census was taken, there were 3 children living in his household as well as three unidentified adults. He migrated to middle Tennessee along with the other members of his family but exactly when he left Granville County is not known. He was still in Granville County in 1837 when he was paid for cutting the hay on the land of Clayborn Parrish, deceased. (Aug. Court 1837) Henry Wheeler paid taxes in the Ledge of Rocks District of Granville Co. through 1838. By 1840 he was living in Bedford Co., Tenn. There were numerous Granville Co. families who found new homes in this area. Henry stayed here for a few years then he and his cousin, Jesse Wheeler, moved south to Limestone Co., Ala. When the 1850 Limestone Co. census was taken there was a William Wheeler age 11, and a Celia B. Wheeler age 5, both b. in Tenn., in Henry's household. It is not known if these were his children, or perhaps his grandchildren.
In 1860 Henry's occupation was listed as "miller."

She was living with her son FM. in 1860.

Rebecca married 1 William Meadows son of John Meadows and Elizabeth 'Liza' Goss on 21 Jun 1830 in Granville Co., North Carolina. William was born about 1810 in Granville Co., North Carolina. He died about 1845 in Granville Co., North Carolina. William was counted in a census 2 in 1840 in Granville Co., North Carolina.

William Meadows was a tobacco farmer. Not long before his death he had bought a tract of land adjoining the lands of his brother-in-law, Moses Wheeler. Before he was able to record the deed he was taken ill and died. The land was located near Allen's Store, adjoining the land of Moses Wheeler, Amos Gooch and others.
About the last part of May 1845 William Meadows was taken ill with an unknown ailment. Papers found in the state file shows he was treated by 2 doctors through June 13th. It would appear this was the most likely the date of his death. The doctor was treating him with quinine, a procedure called "cupping" [used to catch blood since it was erronerously believed that "bloodletting" was beneficial], emetics [to induce vomiting], and other common procedures of the time. Since quinine is used to treat malaria it is likely that was the cause of his death. [Actually, it may have been the quinine it'sself that caused his death as large doses can be fatal.]
Since he died without leaving a will, on 4 August 1845, the Court of Granville County appointed Elijah Meadows, William's brother, to serve as the administrator of William's estate. Rebecca and her children were legally entitled to use the part of the estate necessary for their support for the next year. The Court appointed "commissioners" to award her the following items: 35 barrels of corn, 10 choice hogs which were to be fattened out of the 35 barrels of corn, one cow and calf, one stack of oats, two stacks of fodder, 25 pounds of sugar and 25 pounds of coffee. She was also allowed $28.25 to buy other needed items such as more sugar and coffee, salt and other spices, and wheat or flour.
Before his death William Meadows had become indebted to one Benjamin P. Thorp for $300. Thorp filed suit against the estate and was awarded his money. To pay the debt it was necessary to sell the farm William had just bought. All of the land except the "widow's dower" of 120 acres was sold from the courthouse steps in January 1848.
Rebecca apparenltly had a hard time making ends meet after her husband's death and got into debt. Consequently, she mortgaged her "dower land" to her brother-in-law, Pinkney Meadows. After her death this land was sold with the proceeds apparently going to the children.

Umstead, who has run away and bond not paid." It is not known where the Umsteads were from the time they left Granville County until 1850. When the Federal Census was taken in 1850, Richard H. Umstead, born in Maryland and age 47, his wife Lavinia, age 35, and three daughters were living in the Gold Hill District of Rowan Co., N.C. His occupation was given as "saddler."
