Descendants of Henry Wheeler

Fifth Generation

14. William Wheeler (Martin , John , John , Henry ) was born probably before 1735 in Bertie Co., North Carolina. He died about 1780 in Granville Co., North Carolina.

By 1746, he was living in the area that was Edgecombe Co., N.C. when he signed a petition to the governor to create a new county. That new county was called Granville. He was on the list of taxables taken by Edward Jones in 1750. The list did not give the name of the district so it is still not known exactly where William Wheeler was living at this time.
The 1763 tax list of Granville County, taken by for Len Henley Bullock's area, shows William "Whealer" listed with Reuben Moss [meaning he was mostly likely living on Reuben moss' land.] This would place him near the present Bullock's Crossroads.
In the early 1760's Granville Co. was beginning to experience what was later known as the Regulator movement. The Attorney General of North Carolina was accused of charging outrageous fees and preventing the appointment of Justices of the Peace. It was also charged that the people were being made to suffer by having to pay excessive taxes, high quit rents and extortionate fees. There was fraudulent accounting of public monies as a result of the malpractices of the County court. This was the beginning of the unrest that led to the Battle of Alamance in May of 1771.
The Revolutionary War came about shortly after that. North Carolina furnished her share of troops, one of them being William's son, Benjamin.
The land record offices had been closed for a number of years and no deeds had been recorded. When the land office reopened, in 1778, before a person could register a deed, he had to swear to an Oath of Allegiance to the State of North Carolina. William Wheeler was among those who signed the Oath of Allegiance to the State of North Carolina 30 May 1778, in the "Dutch District" of Granville County. On 7 November 1778, he entered a land grant for 250 acres of land on the west side of Little Ledge of Rock Creek. It is conceivable he could have been living on this property for up to 15 years. He paid taxes [poll taxes, not a property tax] in 1780 and was listed as living adjacent to Charles Turner. This was the last official record of him. He must have died in 1780 or 1781. In 1782, Benjamin Wheeler paid the taxes. Ann Wheeler, who must have been William Wheeler's wife, paid the taxes in 1784 and was listed adjacent to Charles Turner.
There were probably other children who are as yet unidentified.

William married [Mary Ann?] Wheeler 1 about 1753 in North Carolina.

It is likely she was the Mary Wheeler who was mentioned in a deed of Martin Wheeler (#2). Ann Wheeler paid taxes in 1781. She was listed as head of a household [next to Benjamin Wheeler] in the 1786 State census with one male and 2 females besides herself in the household.

They had the following children:

+ 31 M i Benjamin Wheeler Sr.

+ 35 F v Winifred Wheeler
+ 36 M vi Martin Wheeler

15. Melvina Lavonia Wheeler 1 (Martin , John , John , Henry ) was born on 22 Jan 1760 in Granville Co., North Carolina. She died on 2 Sep 1846 in Franklin Co., Georgia. She was buried in Hart Co., Georgia.

There apparently is no real proof that Martin Wheeler is her father. [If this is correct it may have been by a second wife, possibly Miss Roberts, and he would have been getting on in years.] There is only a statement in a book written on the Dyer family by Harriet Farris Boozer of Sandy Springs, Georgia that says this so. Their descendants hold a family reunion each year at the old Dyer home in Adairsville, Ga. A more complete genealogy of this family can be found in William Heller Dyar's book "The Dyar Families". It has been microfilmed by the Mormon Church and the Library of Congress. The name of this family is spelled Dyer and Dyar. Every family that has a variation in the spelling of the name has a story that there was a family argument and so-and-so changed the way he spelled his name. What actually happened is that the people writing a name, the census taker, court clerk, etc., would spell a name the way it sounded to them. Sometimes you will see an old document with the same person's name spelled two or three different ways in the same document.

Melvina married Elisha Dyer son of James Dyer and Ann on 2 Jan 1790 in . Elisha was born on 6 May 1763 in Virginia. He died 1 on 21 Jul 1846 in Franklin Co., Georgia. He was buried in Hart Co., Georgia.

Sarah married 1 William Dyer son of James Dyer and Ann on 2 Jan 1787 in Granville Co., North Carolina. William was born about 1765. He died before 1850 in Lawrence Co., Kentucky. William was counted in a census 2 in 1830 in Lawrence Co., Kentucky.

William Dyer moved with his father, brother Wiley and sister Linna Cash to Russell Co., Virginia. He was counted on Robert Tate's tax list in the Lower District in 1802. He was there as late as 1809. He was called for jury duty but failed to appear. He was not fined as he "showed sufficient cause" for not attending. [Order Book 3, p. 638]

There was a 5-10 year old male listed in the household as well as 2 females aged 50-60. A 50 acre land grant was surveyed off for him on Big Blain Creek in Lawrence Co., Ky. on 12 Feb 1849. He was counted in a census in 1850 in Lawrence Co., Kentucky. There were no children listed for them in this census. However, Mary's mother, Sarah Dyer, was enumerated with them along with Sarah's grandchildren: Arminda Dyer (26), Sarah J. Dyer (16) and Mary W. Dyer (11). He was counted in a census in 1860 in Lawrence Co., Kentucky.

This is probably the Emperour Wheeler who performed some service in the American Revolution. As a result his wife and daughter were awarded a bounty land grant. Emperor Wheeler was mustered into service for a period of 3 years in 1779. There was no indication as to what county he was living in when he enlisted but was in the "Halifax District." The 1777 tax rolls of Cumberland Co., NC show a William Wheeler and an Emperour Wheeler there.

In 1790 he was listed on the tax list next to John Wheeler. Line 11 on the same page is another Jesse Underwood. There are 2 males in the "16 & up" age catagory listed in that household. In 1800 there are 3 Underwoods listed as heads of household in Northampton County: William, Jesse and John. In 1810 there is Jesse, William and Jonathan (John?). By 1820 there are only Jesse and William Underwood left as heads of a household in this county. It is not known how these families are related to Jesse Underwood, the husband of Elizabeth Wheeler, or if Jesse and Elizabeth had any children.
