DURHAM - Norman H. Crabtree, age 90, formerly of 1807 Lakewood Avenue and Emerald Pond Retirement Community in Durham, and Creekside Terrace Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, died Wednesday, February 8, at Alston Brook Nursing Home in Lexington, NC. A Durham native, Mr. Crabtree attended Durham City Schools and graduated from Durham High School. He served his country during World War II while stationed in the U.S. Army for more than four years. Mr. Crabtree worked at Van Straten???s Clothing store in downtown Durham and retired from the City of Durham, where he held the position of tax collector. Generous with his time, Mr. Crabtree gave numerous years of volunteer service to the Durham YMCA. He is survived by nieces, Pattie Rollins Marshall of Hixson, TN, Carolyn Rollins Davis and Emily Crabtree Donnelly, both of Raleigh, NC; and a nephew, Herman H. Crabtree, Jr. of Lexington, NC. He was president of the North Carolina Tax Collectors Association in 1975. He was the recipient of the Association's "Outstanding Tax Collector" award in 1976.

The following is from an article written by Robert Sherrill :
... There are several plaques for work at the Y, including one for Volunteer of the Year (1987) and a pretty one for Distinguished Service, “YMCA of the USA, South Field,” given by a Y official who came up from Atlanta. And there is the big bronze shield heralding the Outstanding Tax Collector of 1976, a job from which he later retired after 15 1/2 years. Before that, he had draped many a Bull City chap with threads — shirts, sweaters, trousers, suits, haberdashery, and whatever — at van Straaten’s, a class men’s clothier. At “home,” Norman is wearing one of those golf-style cardigans, pleated trousers, and tassel loafers. “He knew clothing,” says Milt Barber, another Y regular. “He was a hell of a salesman.” Everyone who remembers van Straaten’s agrees Norman was sensitive and gifted at selling men’s clothes. You should see his collection of baseball caps hanging in neat lines on pegs at his apartment, including a cap Staab sent him from Barcelona and a “Jimmy V” cap, a beauty that is perfectly “finger-waved,” like all of them. But he didn’t know beans about tax collecting. He was out of a job after van Straaten ended its run in the slowly evaporating downtown. He had worked there 28-and-a-half years, but the city finance officer had faith in him and wanted him to apply for assistant tax collector. The city manager, whose OK was needed, was not impressed (no sheep- skin), but he got the job and learned by doing it with the help of Henry Lewis at the Institute of Government in Chapel Hill. He attended classes and seminars until he became that outstanding collector. Long before he became a collector, Norman was one of those lucky young men who received “Greetings” in the second draft. and was taken into the Army in 1940, before America got into World War 2. These draftees were supposed to serve a year and be turned back out into civilian life. There were jokes about this whole thing, but, you know, it got serious when America joined the war, and Norman — he was not alone — stayed in for four-and-a-half years. He was in the coast artillery, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, for much of his spell, but when Germany was defeated, defending America’s eastern shores became moot. He was retrained in field artillery in Texas and sent to the Philippines to prep for the invasion of Japan. But, the A-bombs fell and the Japanese surrendered before another fateful landing. He gets tickled as he tells about how perilous peace was in Manila when the news of the surrender arrived. Everybody went nuts, grabbed whatever noisy weapon was handy, and fired up into the air, you hoped. Norman survived and got a berth on the Yorktown, a carrier converted into a transport ship, landed in San Francisco and wound up being mustered out, a staff sergeant, at Bragg.
In the ’80s and early ’90s, I used to drive by the Crabtree house on Lakewood, and it made me feel all’s right with the world to see Norman sitting in a rocker out on the front porch with that gingerbread decorating post and beam. We exchanged waves. Until he had to quit because of hip problems, I’d see him running in the neighborhood; not jogging, running. He had a very hot pace. He sold his house along about then and moved to Emerald Pond ... .
