He died on 8 Sep 1942 in Antioch, Davidson Co., Tennessee. He was buried in Wheeler Burying Ground in Antioch, Tennessee. William was counted in a census in 1880 in Davidson Co., Tennessee. He was counted in a census 1 in 1900 in 7th Civil District, Davidson Co., Tennessee. He was counted in a census 2 in 1910 in Davidson Co., Tennessee. He was counted in a census 3 in 1920 in 5th Civil District, Davidson Co., Tennessee. He was counted in a census 4 in 1930 in 5th Civil District, Davidson Co., Tennessee.

The 1900 census of Davidson Co., Tenn. indicated that Susie B. Wheeler had given birth to twelve children but that only ten of them were still living. The farm was encumbered with a mortgage at the time.
Susan Blackman Rieves was to Peter Franklin and Celette Louise (Cook) Rieves. She was the sister of William Cook Rieves who married Wm. R. Wheeler's sister, Susan Elizabeth. Peter Franklin Rieves was the 3rd cousin once removed of Charlotte Reeves (Rives) Robertson, pioneer settler of Nashville (She arrived with her husband, James Robertson, in 1780). Susan grew up in the home her father built, not very far from where the Wheelers lived on Mill Creek. That home, called Locust Hill, is located on Reeves Road in Antioch, Tenn. and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
In 1917, William R. Wheeler married a 2nd time to Mattie Bailey. She was born in 1881, in N.C. and died 25 Nov 1956, in Marion, N.C. The 1924 Nashville City Directory says she was "dept. prin." (another family member says she was a teacher) at Draughon's Business College in Nashville. That directory also said William R. Wheeler was assistant principle there.
William R. Wheeler was a farmer and in the winter when he wasn't busy with the farm one family member said he sold insurance. He was a senior deacon of the Mill Creek Baptist Church and a member of the Clayborne Blue Lodge, Masonic Temple. He entered the Masons as an Apprentice on 17 May 1915, and was listed as a Master Mason by 19 July 1915.
One cousin told me she remembers her grandfather living in a "dog-trot" house at the bottom of the hill about where Antioch Pike crosses Mill Creek. It was probably built by his father, Elijah. That house was destroyed by a tornado. William then built another house a little further up the hill. That house was destroyed by fire. He then built a house up near the top of the hill. That house is still standing today and in good repair. There are two millstones in the yard being used as landscaping. They probably came from a gristmill operated on Mill Creek by Elijah or Wiley Wheeler. All of the Wheeler property was sold after William's death and today houses cover the hill where he, his father, and probably his grandfather, once farmed.
The will of William Richard Wheeler was written on 24 Dec 1928 and was filed on 25 September 1942. It reads as follows:

I, W.R. Wheeler of Antioch, Davidson County, Tennessee, being of sound mind and memory do hereby make this my last will and testement hereby revoking all wills by me heretofore made.
1st. It is my desire that my funeral expenses and any other just debts which I may owe at my death be paid by my Executor as soon after my death as possible, and I prefer that this be done out of money derived from my personal property. And it is my desire that a monument be placed at my grave.
2nd. The household goods in my home are the property of my wife, and of course are already legally hers, I just mention this in order that there may be no misunderstanding about them.
3rd. It is my will that my wife Mrs. Mattie B. Wheeler have the house where we now live and about 26 acres of land, being all the real estate purchased by me from Mrs. Bettie McPherson, what ever there is, be it 26 acres more or less. I am indebted to my wife for money borrowed from her, this money she is to get from the property herein willed to her, by cancelling the indebtedness against my estate.
4th. Should there remain any personal property after all my debts and funeral expenses have been paid it is my will that this be equally divided between all my children or their legal heirs. The remainder of my real estate it is my will that it be sold and the proceeds thereof be equally divided between all my children or their legal heirs, should any of them fail to survive me.
5th. It is further my will that should any of the beneficiaries of this will dissent from same that it is my will that he or she shall not have anything at all and this part or parts be divided among those not dissenting.

Witness my hand this 24th day of Dec. 1928.

W. R. Wheeler

Mrs. Mattie B. Wheeler and R. H. Paris were appointed as administrators of the estate.
Mattie Wheeler filed suit in Davidson Co. Court and "insisted" she be repaid money she had paid out during her husband's illness. These included doctor and hospital bills, a bill of $890.00 submitted by M.M. Booth, Funeral Director, for the casket, vault, service, etc., a grave monument, taxes and administrative expenses. It all totaled $1164.00. However, the judge ruled that most of the money she paid out had actually been a part of his estate and she was only entitled to be reimbursed $149.00.
In her testimony one of the questions she was asked was, "What effort have you made to find Mr. Wheeler's title papers to the 45 acre piece of land mentioned in the original bill in this case and state how long he has been in actual possession of it as owner." She replied, "I went carefully through his papers after his death but was unable to find the title papers to said 45 acres tract. He inherited it from his father 45 years ago. During all this time he has had it under fence and most of it in cultivation. This 45 acre tract includes the Mill Creek Bottom of 17 or 18 acres on which Mr. Wheeler raised corn and hay. No one else has ever laid any claim to it or any part of it. The rents I collected, referred to in my original deposition, were rents from this 45 acres. This 45 acres has a house on it, which during the last 45 years, was occupied by one of Mr. Wheelers tenants."
The court ruled that W.R. Wheeler left "practically no personal estate" (since he said he had already given it all to his wife), but "died seized and possessed of" three tracts of land. Two of them were ruled to belong to the widow. The other, the 45 acre tract, was ordered sold to pay the debts of the estate. Any that was left over was to be divided among the surviving eleven children of Wm. and Susan Wheeler. There does not appear to have been anything left after the debts were paid. None of Wm.'s grandchildren that I have talked to remember their parents receiving any money.
