The Community Development Councils believe in
promoting community self-help to assist and improve
the livelihood of their residents. Some of the
projects initiated are as follows: -
1. Community Job Fairs
The Community Development Councils jointly organise
community job fairs with the Ministry of Manpower
on a regular basis for local job seekers. Employers
from the various sectors will be at the fairs
to promote their job openings and recruit suitable
candidates. The objective is to bring together
job seekers and hiring companies to facilitate
the employment process.
2. Health Awareness Programmes
Staying healthy is important. From time to time,
the Community Development Councils work with the
Ministry of Health to promote awareness and educate
residents on health issues through talks and regular
health screenings. Some of the programmes organised
are:
- Mammograms or breast-cancer screening for
women above 45 years old, jointly organised
with the Breast Cancer Foundation.
- Talks on "Ten Tips To Stretch Your Health
Dollars" to promote residents' awareness
on health schemes and subsidies, thus making
healthcare more affordable for the people.
- National Healthy Lifestyle activities
3. Social Assistance Schemes
The Community Development Councils have taken
over the administration of social assistance schemes
from the Ministry of Community Development and
Sports and the National Council of Social Services
from 1 April 2001. Residents facing financial
hardship can apply for assistance to help them
tide over a difficult period and regain their
financial independence.
