| Tibet Month @ Emory University: February 2002 We were particulary excited about this year's Tibet events because the celebration took place during the week of the Tibetan New Year, Losar (02/12/02)... February 11, Monday: Monks from Atlanta's Drepung Loseling Institute kicked off the week with spiritual chants, music, and dance. After the ceremony, they began setting up their tools to create a sand mandala, which was ceremoniously destroyed at the end of the week. Students for a Free Tibet (SFT) set up an information booth including its Zine and Newsletter, flyers for upcoming events, and petitions for the Drapchi Singing Nuns (send an urgent action letter here). In addition, SFT patches were sold to raise money for the group (money spent on copies and supplies). February 12, Tuesday: The monks continued their work on the sand mandala. A meditation lecturer was held in the afternoon at Canon Chapel. SFT sponsored a movie screening of Lost Horizons (dir. Frank Capra, 1937) at White Hall. A guest lecturer from Emory's religion department, Professor Eric Reinders, came to speak about the film after the screening. February 13, Wednesday: Losar; the monks continued their work on the sand mandala. February 14, Thursday: The monks continued their work on the nearly completed sand mandala. SFT sponsored a bowling outing with the monks. February 15, Friday: Final work on the sand mandala. At noon, the closing ceremony was held followed by a precession to Lullwater to disperse the sand into the river. SFT set up a booth to further reach out to the community and educate them on Tibet. February 19, Tuesday: Jamyang Norbu, author of The Mandala of Sherlock Holmes, came to Emory to talk about his role as an author and as a Tibetan. His informative discussion lasted for an hour, which was followed by a book signing. February 20, Wednesday: SFT sponsored a candle light vigil @ the DUC Terraces in rememberance of all the Tibetan prisoners who were persecuted by the Chinese government. Political prisoner posters were made and hung in various places around the campus; candles were passed out during the vigil. February 25, Monday: Bob Thurman of the Tibet House came to Cannon Chapel @ Emory University. It was a spiritual discussion on religion; audiences were encouraged to ask questions. February 26, Tuesday: Mr. Thurman met members of SFT and CIPA faculty for a brief brunch. |
