Ms. Nancy Jo Johnson marries!! 6/25/02 On June 8, Ms. Johnson, one of the premier American photographer and Tibetan social activist, finally marries! "If you can generate happiness in your own home, it fluences the world outside. There's a direct connection," she said. In the late 80's she began studying under a Buddhist lama, and soon began organizing pilgrimages/treks through Nepal, India, and Tibet. She is not only noted for her photography on Tibet, but also for smuggling three Tibetan children to India to study (now being raised as her own). E. Gene Smith Preserves Tibetan Literature 6/21/02 As part of a 5 year project, Mr. Smith, who worked for Library of Congress in New Dehli, plans on scanning his collection of ancient Tibetan text to be made available through his non-profit organization, Tibetan Buddhist Resource Center-- all to be available online free of charge at www.tbrc.org. He credits his lama, Deshung, for introducing him to Tibetan culture. Mr. Smith is now credited for being the person to introduce Tibetan studies to the States. He is planning on moving to New York from New Delhi after his retirement. Dalai Lama not Insulted by Australia's PM 5/24/02 The Dalai Lama is reported not to be snubbed by Prime Minister of Australia, Mr. Howard, who refused to meet him during his visit to Australia. "The nature of my visit here is not political, there is no sort of agenda to talk with the politicians here, including [the] Prime Minister," he said. Both Mr. Howard and Opposition leader Simon Crean have said they have other obligations which prevented them from meeting him. |
