a look at TIBET

Brief introduction to why Tibet is an
INDEPENDENT state:
- Written in their history more than 2000 years as an independent sovereign state.
-1914, peace convention signed by Britain, China, and Tibet that formally recognized Tibet as a fully independent country.

Why you should care:

- Tibet has no representation in the United Nations; the world stood by and watched China invade, destruct, and occupy Tibet.
- Bloched CIA mission to "traine" Tibetans in guerilla warfare resulted in retaliation from the Chinese government.
- Currently around 1200 known Tibetans remain incarcerated in Chinese prisons, persecuted on the account of their political, religious, or ethical views.

Why not see and learn for yourself:

- In 1996, the Communist regime initiated the "Strike Hard" campaign specifically targeting Tibetan Buddhism, which has been vehemently pursued in recent years.
- Tibetans must pledge their allegiance to the Chinese government, denounce the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama.  Failure can result in imprisonment or other forms of punishment.
- Population transfer resulted the Tibetans as a minority in thier own state.  Today, 7.5 million Chinese outnumber the Tibetans numbering at 6 million (and dwindelling).
- Less than 9 million hectares of forest is left in Tibet (from 25 million), due to deforestation from development and modernisation by the Chinese government.
- Correlation between environmental destruction of the Tibetan Plateau has a direct affect in Pacific typhoons, patterns of El Nino, and the global weather systems.
- Uncontrolled mining of borax, chromium, salt, copper, coal, gold, and uranium has resulted in loss of wildlife, pollution of streams and rivers, massive soil erosion, and severe landslides.
- Nuclear dumping in Tibet has resulted in mysterious deaths of Tibetans and livestock residing close to China's nuclear sites.  Increases in cancer and birth defects, and contaminated waterway has also been reported around nuclear sites.

Universal Human Rights

- An expression of opnion contrary to Chinese Communist Party ideology can result in arrest.
- The Chinese Government has systematically covered religious insitutions with police presence in attempt to eradicate allegiance to the Dalai Lama, Tibetan nationalism, and any dissention.
- Tibetans are subject to arbitrary arrest and detention.
- The imprisoned are often denied legan representation and Chinese legal proceedings fail to meet international standards.
- Torture still prevails in Chinese prisons and detention centres despite being in contradiction with the United Nations Convention Against Torture.
- Tibetan children are denied access to adequate healthcare and schooling.
- Enforced disappearances, where a person is taken into custody and the details of their detention are not disclosed, continue to occur.
- More than 70 percent of Tibetans in the Tibetan Autonomous Region now live below the poverty line.
- Tibetan women are subjected to enforced sterilization, contraception , and abortion procedures.

Tibetan Women' Rights... oh right, they have none!
China adopts UN policies which listed the fundamental women's rights, however, it still continues to abuse its agreements denying Tibetan women both rights to reproductive choice and adequate health care.

- 1982, it imposes abortions or exorbitant fines on women "becoming pregnant without permission," or having more children than regional quotas allowed.
- Tibetan women are forced to have abortions and or be sterilized.
- Even women who are permitted to have a child are sometimes tricked or forced into "birth control operations."
- Three methods of forced birth control: abortion, sterilization, or infanticide.  Most commonly combined with one another (first the abortion, than sterilization).
- Economic penalities include heavy fines, loss of jobs, demotions, or cuts in salary.
