  • Will-O'the-Wisp
One night I walked along a wooded lane that passed beneath giant Linden and Tulip trees. There, along the side of my path in a depression that followed the form of the road, appeared a small and glittering light. It was no bigger than a speck, and I approached with delight, only to watch it then dissappear. Fortunately, there were more ... many more. I approached others and stared in amazment as each winked out as I drew close. I unsheathed my flashlight like a sabre to shed the light of science on my surroundings. Nestled among the duff and dust where tiny specks of fungus scattered about on decomposing twigs. I quickly returned to the warmth of my comfortable world to research the phenomenon, and realized I may have stumbled upon a smallish version of the elusive Will-O'the-Wisp. I had my answer ... or had I? They could hardly have been considered balls of flame, so maybe instead it was fair Ghillie Dhu and the wood sprites playing games with me after all, there beneath the giant Linden and Tulip trees.
