Ancient Forests

  • The New Forest
The New Forest (or Nova Foresta) was created by William I (the Conquerer) in 1079 and has been around only a few score years shy of a millenium. Its the largest surviving medieval forest in England.

  • Sherwood Forest
Sherwood Forests is, arguably, the most famous of the world's forests. Tales of Robin Hood and his merry men have made it so. At one time it did indeed exist as an extesive forest that stretched for 20 miles, 5 to 8 miles across. However, today only a single stand of ancient woodland covering less than 3/4 of a square mile is all that remains of Sherwood Forest.
