This page contains sample assessments created by me during a graduate level class titled Assessment of Learning. These are samples of the types of assessments I would use in my classroom. My current job with Educational Talent Search does not require formal assessment of my students.

Philosophy of Assessment

Context Statement

This essay was created to explain how I feel about assessment in the classroom. I feel it is an informal look at my philosophy. I would continue to modify my thoughts with the classes that I assess. The mixture of students would help decide the type of assessments I would use. I do not feel this paper is as strong as it could be, but I plan on expanding my philosophy after more experience as a teacher.

Validity and Reliability Statement

Context Statement

This paper explains the steps I would take to make sure the tests I give are reliable and valid. I speak briefly about being unbiased, but it is hard to describe this step without knowing the type of class I will have. These issues are important in making sure all students are test fairly. I would like to continue to research the concepts of reliability and validity, and to continue to reform my philosophy. I feel confident in my steps of insuring validity, but I need to work more on reliability.

Assignment 3

Context Statement

In this assignment I created a sample selected response test for American History high school students. It would test students on a unit about information preceding the Civil War.  While I was working on this assignment, I learned valuable information about constructing test questions. I had learned this information previously, but this class re-enforced many important principles. I feel that the strength of this assignment is in the matching questions. I am least satisfied with the matching questions. If I was actually teaching this unit, I feel I could create some stronger test questions.

Assignment 4

Context Statement

In this assignment I created a sample pre-test for 8th Grade American History class. This pre-test shows sample constructed response questions. I feel that the short answer questions cover the material that students should remember about the Civil War. I am pleased with the construction of the essay questions. I feel that this assignment shows my ability to construct higher-order thinking questions.

Assignment 5

Context Statement

In this assignment I explain a lesson plan that uses discussion questions. I chose a lesson plan from Talent Search that covers self-esteem issues. This is one of my favorite assignments. The students have fun and really open up during this activity. The discussion questions are really more sample questions. I really have to judge the group and flow with them when discussing.

Assignment 6

Context Statement

I created this assessment to judge middle school students toward school. I would use the information to help plan exploratory classes. I enjoyed this type of assignment. I feel its strength is in the simplicity of the statement. I would like to continue creating this type of inventories to assess my student's thoughts. I feel they will be honest when given anonymously.   I would like to work on formatting to make them easier to read and understand.

Assignment 7

Context Statement

This assignment allowed me to create graphs to help parents understand standardized test scores. I enjoyed this assignment, and feel that my charts are very easy to understand. I would like to be able to create different charts as the need arise or as parents have different questions. I learned more about standardized test scoring from completing this assignment
